And shows how deeply conflicted Ennis was. He wouldn't fully commit to Jack, yet refused to accept that Jack had a right to live his own life when he, Ennis, was not around!. Also it shows maybe, how much he, Ennis, was actually dependent upon Jack; for WHAT, I'm less sure! A hope for what 'might have been' maybe.

I wondered about that scene too. Since Ennis himself said the most traveling he'd done is around a coffee pot looking for a handle, it seems at least somewhat unlikely that he would have heard about "what they have in Mexico for boys like you.." Thoughts?

I'm sure Ennis would have heard plenty of stories in Wyoming about guys who travelled to Mexicoor Denver or San Francisco for that matterfor that kind of sex that was "other than the norm" (not that most of his acquaintances would have put it that way).

Anything is possible - is it likely? Mexico was 700 plus miles away. Most of my family were farmers prior to my generation, and they didn't travel too far since the animals needed care at least twice a day whether it was feeding (beef) or feeding + milking cows. I heard a lot of stories growing up and it was never sure which ones were true, exaggerated or just someone's imagination.

While we're on the subject of truth and exaggeration, I've heard many times that men on the farm loose their virginity by fcking the farm animals, sheep especially. How true is this?

I have heard about the farm animals as well, but if anyone did it on the farm when I grew up, they surely didn't admit it. It wasn't mentioned very much where I grew up, fairly religious area might be the reason.

When sex or money is involved I wouldn't put anything past anyone.

I read about calves, so stuck out my finger. Their tongues are like sandpaper. So, I think a lot of that stuff is just stories. I say that because high school kids talk, even if it is "what they heard" about some distant person. Might be themselves they're talking about but of course, they can't admit it so they say "a friend up north" or something. True enough, with sex or money I wouldn't put anything past anyone either. Most people anyway. Remember the guy that was screwing that woman's horses in the news? He must have been huge for that to be "worthwhile." So it does happen some, just not as often as a wild imagination might tell.

Did you notice how relaxed the sheep looked after Jack and Ennis started shagging each other?

Exactly; they were all yentas! Once the tent gig happened, they smirked at each other and were like, "Well, THAT took long enough!"
