It must of been a Goosebumps 2000 series because I never read a book about a remote control.

Don't believe R.L Stine had a Goosebumps titled book "Click", nor do I remember reading one from the original series that had this premise.

I saw it I don't remember it being called "click" but I know he tried to turn his friend off with the power button and ended up stuck in darkness forever
This needs more views, it's too amazing!

I'm sure the idea has been around for a while, i thought i was the first one as a kid to think about it..

I am certain that this is based on a 1982 Benny Hill sketch.
You can hear the theme tune when Morty takes him the "menu section" of the remote, paying their homage to Mr. Hill.

That particular episode wasn't based on one of Stine's books. In that case, the remote came back to bite him because the kid didn't use it for good like he should have, not sure if this one would have done the same thing.

I'm going to settle this debate right now. The episode was not based off a book, but a short story in Tales to Give You Goosebumps (ISBN ISBN 0-590-62836-4). You can find a listing of all of the short stories in this book on the following wikipedia page.
                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Goosebumps_books
Here's another site referencing its publication and summarizing the episode.
                    http://goosebumps.wikia.com/wiki/Click
Think that should be enough to settle it once and for all.

Actually everything everyone has mentioned is loosely based on a short story about a boy who is given a ball of magic thread.

They added the remote to make it more modern. It's from The Book of Virtues by William J. Bennett.

I'm fairly sure that this is a rip off of a Paul Jennings short story in the late 80's/early 90's.

This movie wasn't really original in concept but it was great done.
It was more than just an Adam Sandler film.

Not saying this is the first, but, an Amazing Stories episode titled
                            Remote Control Man:
An unhappy and frustrated husband with a nagging wife and an incorrigible son finally finds solace in his new TV set that "comes alive" with the use of a magic remote control.
