brat? how was she a brat exactly? a brat is someone who doesn't listen to their parents, who complains and throws tantrums and is stubborn. which fanning did none of in the film. she acted scared at times. her character had small panic attacks, but who wouldn't if aliens were coming out of the ground trying to destroy everyone?? she wasn't a brat. she only showed concern and care for her brother and dad. fanning and cruise were the stars of this film. and I would even go as far to say that her acting, in some cases, surpassed cruise's.

I know that this is months after you initially posted this, but I think a better word would have been "Annoying." I'm sure the OP would feel the same sentiments regardless of the word used. And yes, her character was annoying in this movie. I'm not picking apart the actions of a child reacting to real world situations. I just found her character annoying.

I am literally watching it now, in the background, whilst writing something up and came here to see if that was the case. I've been pleading for her to meet a grisly end but for some reason she keeps managing to evade a just fate.
Very unlikeable children that lead you to root for the aliens to win. -

Yeah I would have paid the aliens to suck the blood out of her.

Dakota is a great actress and she did the part good. She was meant to be a screaming child and she was. Don't know ho else she was supposed to act.
So she wasn't more annoying than the average kid walking around. -

I have never been that fond of this Spielberg alien world domination opus, and Fanning is one of the main reasons. She is an annoying and ott screeching brat. WTF was she and Spielberg thinking with her characterization.
I don't hear of her much anymore today and she was too old for Fern in
Charlotte's Web.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?
