"One of the creepiest moments for me was when the birds flew over the trees and you saw a tripod on the horizon." -and right after that the slow walking crowd starts to run toward the ship.
But the creepiest scene to me was after the ship was sunk - the wide angle view of people running from the tripods across an open hillside. They looked helpless like ants.

Watching it on TV right now, and just saw a scene I always found creepy: when the train flies by, and it is entirely on fire. That freaked me out.

And it's not even a horror movie! But this does stuff to me when I watch it. It's so disturbing from start to finish. One of the creepiest moments for me was when the birds flew over the trees and you saw a tripod on the horizon. The fear that washed over me when I first saw that! And not to mention the first attack. At the cinemas, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I was so swept up in it, and with the loud surround sound, it really made me feel like I was there experiencing it. I think even John Williams said it was one of the scariest moments in movie history. Well, I'd have to agree with him.
Anyone else just creeped out by this film?
Waigon, I couldn't agree more. I was in my mid-thirties when this came out and I was NOT expecting this to creep me out. Disturbing is a good way to describe the mood of the film. The first attack scene was masterfully directed, the Tripod Horn sound was pulverizing in surround sound (it's currently my text tone on my phone) and Speilberg's "patented" use of the swaying searchlights always has a creepy element to it. Back in
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
the alien ships at the landing site were doing the same thing. Of course, they were benevolent as opposed to the Tripods.
I think the use of washed out colors had a lot to do with it as well. I was 11 years old in 1980 when I saw John Carpenter's
          The Fog
. THAT movie had the same effect on me. Creepy mood and I loved the use of the ghosts in that film as well.
You'll work on "We were making too much money".

I must be numb but I didn't feel frightened anywhere in the movie.
More like disgusted by the happy ending.

no not really that scary, it does have effective scenes, my fav is the tripod emerging from the New Jersey Street

                  Probably the scariest PG-13 blockbuster.

It has given me nightmares. I love this film. Scene after excellent scene. Yes, it has plot holes, but the mood and the effects and the way humans are depicted as mere insects to be crushed. My wife hates it and can't understand why I like it so much. I can't put my finger on it, but I can watch it again and again and still feel uneasy. First saw it about ten years ago when I was about 27. Loved it ever since.

One of the scariest films ever made? Don't make me laugh.
