Anyone reeeallly hate Katherine?

i remember despising her when i first watched the show (she was just a mean, condescending, and unlikeable bree). i'm rewatching seasons 4 and 6 and idk why any of the women on the lane even bother with her!
the fact that she married mike (how was that even okay? did mike have amnesia or something i can't remember), wanted to ruin susan's wedding and made it all about her, and how she kept insisting to the whole neighbourhood how their marriage was failing because mike still loved her.
why why why did any of the housewives even waste their time on this woman!?
did anyone hate her as much as i did? what were her redeeming qualities, IF ANY? -

Katherine married Mike? Did I completely forget that plotline?
I lost a lot of respect for Mike actually when it came to Katherine. I mean yes she went psycho and it wasn't a normal reaction at all, but she had every reason to believe he was committing to a future with her. He literally asks her to stay around for him and live together when she was considering moving to be with her daughter and grandchild. If he wanted Susan and not Katherine that was a perfect opportunity to have wished her well and just let her go and live her own life. Why ask her to be there if he wasn't willing to offer her anything? As his back up if he didn't wind up with who he really wanted? -

I lost a lot of respect for Mike actually when it came to Katherine.
He was pretty cruel. He even told Susan that he and Katherine had sex so much because they had nothing else in common. It made me feel uncomfortable, almost along the lines of saying "that's all she's good for" just to make Susan feel better. A true gentlemen would have declined to speak of the past. They were broken up and both dated and slept with other people during the breakup. No need to bash the people they dated. -

Mike never married Katherine; they were about to board a plane for Vegas TO get married when he realized he had to go rescue his son and Susan from that psycho Dave. When Mike had amnesia, he got with Edie briefly, maybe that's what you're thinking of.
Mike treated Katherine carelessly; he told her he loved her and then jilted her for Susan. Susan was a coward, didn't even have the grace to approach Katherine to see if she was okay. Katherine lost the love of her life (she called Mike that) and a good friend at the same time. It's no wonder she went crazy.
As far as the other women bothering to put up with her, do you recall when Orson went to prison and Danielle took back Benjamin, and Bree started drinking again? It was Katherine who got her through it, without her Bree's business would have tanked, would never become as successful as it did.
You've every right to be annoyed by a character (I realllly don't like Susan, for instance) but I think Katherine is all right. -

YES, Can't stand this character.. but then again I don't think she is that likable anyway. She is boring to me and I dislike her and her character! I agree with your dislike. I don't recall the story lines. But every time they said she was beautiful I felt like rolling my eyes. I don't find her nearly as attractive as the other ladies on the show. I find no qualities. I'm re watching it over thanksgiving and I am at this part with her and hoping we are almost through it.

Season 4 Katherine will always be the best for that character. Season 5 and 6 Katherine is a waste of Dana's talent.

Because Katherine is just like these women. A person with problems that needs help. It would have been hypocritical for them to abandon Katherine after everything they have done to each other. Look at Bree who covered up the hit and run on Carlos' mother. Look at how pathetic and selfish Susan was when it came to covering up Gaby's child molesting stepfather's death. Each of these housewives has been immoral which makes them human. They're no better than Katherine. -

IMO the character of Katherine was ruined. Season 4 she was this strong character and then she turned so weak and whiny. It's like they didn't know what to do with her.
I don't think they did know what to do with characters (bar the four main housewives) after their "mystery" arcs were over - hence writing out Alfre Woodward and Drea de Matteo after one season. -

Drea was only on board for one season. She had no intention of staying after season 6. Alfre on the other hand, I believe the plan was for her to stay on with the show after season 2. The writers screwed up her character so badly that it wasn't possible. She wasn't a hit with fans because Marc isolated her character from the other housewives. She was just there for her story and that was it. -

I know, but I think the writers knew that they couldn't carry the character over to another season anyway, so there was never any issue with Drea only signing on for one season or else they would've gone with an actress who was willing to do more if they had future plans for the character.
Dana Delany essentially got to stay on because Marc Cherry liked her and she was the first choice to play Bree. Dana at that point rejected it because she had just played a similar character three years before on the American Beauty-esque soap Pasadena. -

I agree with what you are saying. Once her planned story arc was over, there wasn't much for her to do, and she was so lame going after Mike when he clearly wasn't that into her and then she falls for a lesbian stripper. You're right that whether or not Drea only wanted one season, her character just killing in the neighborhood after her story ended wouldn't have done anything for her character. I think Katherine should have been written out much earlier when she had some dignity left.
Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

I partially agree that the writing wasn't always great, but I bought the 4 women as friends who interacted. To me it never felt like Katherine had a place in the group, so once her mystery was over she had a little bit of a "queen housewife frenemy" thing with Bree and fighting with Susan over Mike. Maybe it was because she wasn't there since season 1 she didn't have a set niche, but to me she was there for her story line and lingered instead of leaving like Betty or Angie, but she didn't have anything to do.

The writers needed her to fill in the blanks. And once she wasn't between Mike & Susan, they got rid of her. To me, she was a nice addition with what happened in season 5 (being Mike's rebound & replacing Eddie, after she left). But she should've left AFTER the season 6 premiere. Everything that happened, afterwards, was just cruel, and destroyed Mike & Susan's characters, even more, as well as hers. So keeping her after Susan & Mike got married, was the bad decision. But whatever, the characters stopped being likeable, around her arrival, so she wasn't really a blot in the landscape. And everything bad happening to her, was just the normal continuity to the new tone of the show. When the housewives became a bunch of petty shrews, that weren't very funny anymore (except Gaby, who always owned that side of her).

Hell no! Katherine is one of the most respectable women on the Lane. Sure, she had her petty moments (feuding with Susan) but they all did.
And as far as the things mentioned in the OP, that wasn't Katherine being mean and condescending; she had a nervous breakdown. Imagine everything that she'd been through happened to you. How poised would you be?Pidder Padder? Make my Heart go Boom Bap and Then We'll Talk!
