I knew the guy looked so damned familiar that it was eating me up that I couldn't place him. I didn't realize it was Diesel til the end credits started rolling. I have to admit, though, that I've only ever seen one Diesel flick.
I've seen very few Stallone flicks, too, but Cop Land was a good one.
I guess they all have at least one good one inside them. -

I think he surprised everyone.
All the look-how-hot-I-am, see-what-a-badass-I-am and watch-me-blow-things-up types of roles that he has taken have managed to obscure the fact that he really is a talented actor. -

Not his best work (Boiler Room holds that distinction), but definitely his second best.
I'm starting to think Diesel isn't a bad actor so much as he's just in bad movies. Okay, scratch that. He's in terrible movies. It's clear from this movie he does, in fact, have a little bit of depth. -

At first, the hair was the biggest shock. Vin Diesel doesn't have hair. Plain and simple. So far nobody has questioned that.
But the next shock was the performance - Vin isn't a bad actor by any stretch, but he's always had that look about him as though he could only be a tough guy, hence, that was all he did. After being cast as a big tough-guy once, he couldn't get away from it. Even in the family movie he was in, he was a soldier! (Pacifier)
Anyway, it was a good performace, and I was quite impressed. -

I've always thought he had it in him to be a great actor its just that he is so perfect to cast as an action star, he's huge, has a really deep voice and looks like he wouldnt have to try very hard to kill you.
Someones bad grammar when writing on an internet board is not proof they are a moron. -

"Someones bad grammar when writing on an internet board is not proof they are a moron."
Though it's usually a good indication.
Anyway, I was impressed with Vin Diesel's performance in this. I tend to want to root for him anyway, and this movie gave me justification to. -

I haven't seen
Boiler Room,
but years ago I saw a short called
Multi-facial,
made by Vin, and about his struggle to find roles. It was a wonderful piece, well written and well acted. The gist of it was that he couldn't get cast, because he was too light for black roles, and too black for white roles. Multi-facial came out in 1994, and it was still a few years before he got real roles. So, I can forgive him for doing dumb action movies, if that was mostly what Hollywood offered him. I do wish he would get some better parts. -

I knew about this movie and waited a long time for it. And when I finally saw it, I was more then pleased afterwards. Since Vin is one of my favourites this was really enjoyable, since I knew that people know will se that he in fact has talent.
The by far best scene in the movie where he's showing his skills as an actor is the interogation scene with his character's cousin Tony Compagna. -

I agree with the OP. I think a lot of credit should go to Lumet, but here Vin Diesel definitely shows he can ACT. Very surprising.
He should lay off the Babylons and Pitch Blacks and play more roles like this. -

Yeah you know, I just watched it and it made me think about Vin Diesel a lot, about his earlier films. I realised he's been in a lot of crap movies, but those movies were always somehow crap in spite of him, and never actually because of him. He was very often the only good thing about those movies.
He's got a lot of charisma, and a strong build that makes him a believable action star. He's cool as hell as Riddick, in those movies Vin's got both this cheesy 80s vibe action vibe and utter seriousness that make him a great movie hero.
In films like Find Me Guilty, he shows humour, irony and a little more range.
He should be getting more A list movies. He's the closest thing to a modern day Schwarzennegger we got.
