Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — V for Vendetta

    april89 — 9 years ago(November 21, 2016 10:27 AM)

All the films imagine the fascist governments of tomorrow having traditional, conservative populist values.
However, I actually think we are going in a different direction.
Questioning multiculturalism, gender fluidity, legal and illegal immigration of Muslims and their lack of assimilation, as well as the LGBT movement has become not only a taboo, but kind of illegal.
On the other hand, being a practicing Christian is considered funny and obsolete, ranging from teasing in the West to no one giving a beep about what happens to Middle-Eastern Christians.
We already have regimes in this world very similar to the one in V for Vendetta- Russia being a notable example.
But will Western Powers(UK, Germany, Scandinavia, Canada, USA when Democrats win again) turn into an ideological opposite but de facto equivalent?
The reason no one has dared make such a film until now just actually shows you that it's becoming a reality.

Well, that's a pretty convoluted, twisted attempt at making an ideological screed.

It's ok not to agree, but as a rational person, do you believe such a thing is impossible, and why?

Your mistake was taking this movie's premise at face value.
When Hugh Laurie goes for a colonoscopy there is a doctor in the House.

Who's ever been arrested for questioning those things?
And what's the problem with Muslims not assimilating? Ever been to Little China? Little Italy? Little Tokyo? There are entire areas of cities that look more like Mexico than the U.S.
It's not a Muslim thing to not assimilate. It's a cultural thing.
On the other hand, being a practicing Christian is considered funny and obsolete,
Part of that is due to Christians still being the dominant religion, yet thinking that's reason enough for the government itself to follow Christian values. That's should never happen.
to no one giving a beep about what happens to Middle-Eastern Christians.
I care very much what happens to them. It saddens me if they're harassed or attacked.
The reason no one has dared make such a film until now just actually shows you that it's becoming a reality.
Well, no, I don't see how.
Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

The point of my question wasn't that USA/EU are a liberal dictatorship, but that, in case they became dictatorships after an apocalyptic scenario, they probably wouldn't become classically conservative fascist like all of these Post apocalyptic movies show.

I don't get your point, because any government with the totalitarian nature portrayed in this movie would, by definition, not be liberal. Liberal means providing equal rights, to the greatest extent possible, to as many citizens as possible. Many dictatorships call themselves "socialist", but that is in name only, for propaganda purposes. Primary example: The National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazis. They were certainly not liberal or left-wing in any way. So any government that evolves to the point described in movies like this one would not be liberal. That would include the western powers you named. I believe you are saying that if these nations become dictatorships in the future, maybe because of some apocalyptic event, that they would be leftist dictatorships. But I think that if they were to become dictatorships, in the process they would cease to be leftist, or liberal.

Is there a reason why you are posting this EXACT SAME thread on multiple boards of dystopian sci fi movies? lol just saw the same thread over on the Children of Men board. The EXACT same thread. You didn't even edit it to fit the movie.
And the government in V for Vendetta is MOST DEFINITELY a conservative government. Nothing liberal about it. But I do know you conservatives twist things to fit your world view.. Its just how you are. Its okay.

"Progressives" always accuse others of exactly what it is they are doing. IE it's not racism it's "affirmative action"
