Don't ask me, I never understood the relevancy of IMDb's offensive word censoring. It just gets in the way of discussions.

I never had any problem discussing my role as an assistant in Scunthorpe.

Why would it get in the way? Do you really find it difficult to discuss anything without swearing? Or is that not what you mean?

It's not about being vulgar and uttering profanities. It's not even about censorship. It is about weird decisions about what goes into said filter and the lack of control a user have over it.
The IMDb boards serve the general audience. It has few restrictions, strict guideline, or a code of conduct. A user is not encouraged to be professional and courteous toward the rest of the members with his speech.
The audience that tends to visit the boards use a day-to-day language, rather than strict, literary one. The result of which is a more open and easygoing environment.
Limiting colloquial speech, even when it borderlines at profanity, at times, seems redundant. Consider that some boards audience it at the adult age group. Narrowing vocabulary without giving the option to turn off said filter, is counterproductive to a discussion.
In actuality, most people who want to use the restricted words just replace some characters with their visual counterpart to get the desired result, which makes the filter useless.

Now I can finally call everyone an ass.
                          Hey, Scruffy, you're an ass.
And you, reading this, you're an ass.
                          I'm an ass.
We are all asses on this fine day. Let us celebrate.
I do wonder though, what is the collective noun for asses?
A buttload of asses? An association of asses?

A fandom. Just fandom, leave off ass entirely as it's understood.
