Couldn't read all the posts but I must say: I liked Alan Arkin's performance in Little miss sunshine and I liked Eddie Murphy's, not to forget Mark Whalberg in the departed. But in my opinion,Eddie Murphy deserved to win that Oscar.

eddie deserved to win that oscar, he really impressed me, and he has a wide range of ablities.
he actually deserves the rib the steak and the chocolate cake, cuz he's got soul 😄
again give an oscar to a guy who had a half hour screen time sounds like insanity, unless he's Brando i cant find a decent explanation.
but a lot of people who got a lot of talent got snubed by the academy, even scorsese won an oscar too late, and ots of actors didnt get awards they deserved.
but the oscars although they give a boost to your career for at least 5 to 10 years arent the best means by which you can judge an actor or a movie for that matter.
"thanks to god i'm an atheist"

Meet Dave was not a bad movie.
It was actually a really cute kids movie and he did a great job imo.
And he's done great acting jobs before, it's just people tend to think that a Good Acting Performance can't include any Comedy.

Murphy was quite mediocore, he did not deserve to win the Oscar at all. He was really overrated, I really hated his performance.

Eddie Murphy was on his way to winning an Oscar. In fact, it seemed like a sure thing. Unfortunately, his chances were sabotaged by the untimely release of Norbit during the peak of the voting season. Suddenly, many Oscar voters took a second look at Eddie Murphy, thought about his wretched career choices, and said, "Mmm, no thanks." Alan Arkin, who has only made about 4 or 5 unwatchable movies in his 40 year screen career, seemed like the safer choice. Arkin's Oscar was as much a lifetime achievement award as it was an acknowledgement of his performance in Little Miss Sunshine, which itself was surprisingly brief.

I'm starting to wonder if his loss was a combination of Norbit's release, Eddie's (so-called) underwhelming acceptance speeches from the other awards shows and his refusal to perform "Patience" at the ceremony..

Obviously, at this point in history, people need to understand that the movie business is not about talent or performance, perhaps it never was. Just like in the movie regarding the music business, its not about skills or "the voice", or in this case, "the acting ability". Its about looks. Its about drama. Its about the story. Little Miss Sunshine was "the little movie that could" in 2006. Look at Juno or Slumdog Millionaire the movie business loves small movies that do big business, because then it gives them an opportunity to award them oscars to get big ratings on oscar night. Eddie Murphy has been a joke for a long time. He's been doing nothing but stupid comedies for the last 20 years. Its the same reason Mickey Rourke didn't win the oscar this year. The people who vote don't care about your performance. They care about whether you project the image of an oscar winner and obviously Eddie does not do that evident by the fact that he followed up Dreamgirls with Norbit and Meet Dave!
Anyway, I'm sure at this point in this thread and discussion, I'm not saying anything new. But Murphy was really good. And he was definitely, DEFINITELY better than Alan Arkin? Its almost funny to think about really.

Thank you for saying what I believe was the reason A.A. won the award. It was simply a Lifetime Achievement Award. I don't think anyone stood a chance of beating him. That being said, I wonder who came in second? That's who actually won for their performance not for sentimentality. I'm not saying who should have won, just why he did. Everyone nominated has merit

Judi Dench won the Oscar, because she should have won the Oscar for Best Actress the previous year (Helen Hunt said it in her acceptance speech) and a lot of people felt guilty about it. I really don't think she deserved it for "Shakespeare in Love". Judi Dench is probably(*) the best stage actress on the planet, but her earlier film performances didn't really show that off.

                                        • On late night schools TV they used to show several top actresses perform Lady MacBeth and even to the kids watching scene by scene the gap was very apparent.
