Why didn't they ever make this film with Whitney Houston in the 80s?

they had wanted to, but the reason they didnt was they did not want to cast Jennifer Holliday in the role of Effie cause she was such bitch on Broadway and they didnt have a singer/actress that they thought could play the part.

Beyonc is pretty damn good. Beyonce is not chopped liver. Whitney would have to dial down her voice as the main plot point was that Effie was the better singer but was forced out because of her looks, Deena being prettier.
There had been many attempts to film Dreamgirls over the years but plans always fell through. It took a lot of money and a superior cast. It was a huge undertaking. I think this version is one of my favorite movies. I got the 3 disk special by Target and it has background galore.
