she was selfish. all she cared about was herself. everything was about her singing lead. if she didnt want to sing in the background then just quit the group. simple as that. why stay and whine and make everyone else miserable??? and she was unprofessional too. she walked out on a studio session and a live performance. then the bitch shows up at dress rehearsal late and gets mad that she was replaced. and while she is begging curtis to stay with her during her " and i am tellin you" song, why not just tell him you are pregnant with his child?? that would maybe make him stay. then fast forward 8 years later and the bitch is living in poverty and at the unemployment office. so its been 8 years and u still havent told curtis about his daughter?? your daughter went 8 years without knowing her real father because of your stupidity?? and why not tell curtis about his daughter?? he may have been conniving and shady but he never showed signs that he would make a bad father. and why is she living in poverty when her baby daddy is loaded as hell?? any woman with a brain wouldve dragged curtis to family court for child support. very stupid movie [
] sparkle is waaay better. the only time i felt sympathy for effie was when they stole her song. that was a fcked up thing to do but that was it.

Effie was a proud woman, she ain't gonna beg even if she was a beggar. That's why she never called Curtis, she wasn't going to beg to a man that betrayed her no matter how poor she was.
but u are missing the point. its NOT about her. its about the child! she had no valid reason to hide her daughter from the father. that is wrong no matter how u slice it. maybe if he was beating her then i could understand possibly.
Why did she have to sing background when it was her band and she had the best voice? That's the whole point, her talent was more than the others and she deserved her place at the center. Then Curtis puts her in the back because she is not beautiful like Deena which is unfair any way you cut it. That is what makes her sympathetic.
ok then why not quit then and go solo??? she wasnt held hostage in the group. she was free to leave. u could argue that she stayed in the group for the money but this is the same woman who didnt take her rich baby daddy to court for child support so that cant be it..

Not that I think there is ever a good reason to act the way that Effie did, but I do understand her hurt. Effie was obviously the most talented in the group, but she was put to the back because of the way that she looked. I would be very upset if I'm used to being in the front and then I got put to the back because I'm not pretty enough. I think the fact that her friends and brother didn't stand up for her but instead thought about how they could get ahead hurt the most. As a bigger girl, I do understand what it feels like to get overlooked because I may be less attractive than other girls. I think there were much better ways for her to handle the situation, but I am able to sympathize for her.

This was also a very different time. Think about all they had to go through to get Jimmy Early's song on mainstream radio. An established, popular performer on the "black charts," and they had to pay with cash and cars just to get him airtime. They were popular, but also a novelty for the time. They weren't lining up for talent, regardless of color back then like they do now.
Also, as far as Effie's pregnancy and child she was proud and she was scared. She gave her heart to Curtis, she trusted him and followed him. She was a diva when he met her, but she was also the leader of the trio so Curtis had to go through her to get to the other two. So he flatters her, woos her, plays to her ego, and seduces her. When he doesn't need Effie anymore, he makes his move on Deena. She is not the strong force of nature that Effie is. Deena is easily controlled, so Curtis can mold her into exactly what he wants, the superstar HE created. He breaks Effie down until she is weak enough to muscle out. He betrayed her in every way possible; he took her virginity, her love, her group, her friends, her brother, her song you think maybe she was afraid he would take her daughter too? Take her and use her up to further his career like he did with Effie, CC, Jimmy, and anyone else with a talent or skill he could exploit? Curtis believed that he could use his money to control the world. Money isn't everything and Effie knew that. If she truly thought her child would be better with Curtis, she would have let her be with Curtis, but it was clear the ONLY thing he had to offer was money. He loved no one, he respected no one. A child cannot thrive in a home like that no matter how much money you throw at her. Damn right we should root for Effie. Not everyone can keep bouncing back after hits like those.

I agree with most of what you said, Marleinasmon, except for one thing. I doubt if Curtis was suppose to have taken her virginity. I think that both Deana and Lorelle were both virgins but something tells me that Effie had a little experience under her belt. Effie's dominant, boisterous and womanly personality, hardly seemed like the type that would save herself for marriage.

re the racial split in the American market at the time - it was the black acts' popularity over here in the UK through the Northern Soul and Mod scene, and onwards into the mainstream through programmes like Ready Steady Go that then boosted their standing with US white audiences.
