The scene where Gyllenhaal walks into the house and goes into the basement and he has that intense conversation with the film guy. And he says "is anyone upstairs?" It was obviously clear someone was up there
    So my question is:

    1. Was the entire scene just made for suspense? because it was pretty clear that Graysmith comes to conclusion that is was Leigh moments after.
    2. Also, who do you guys think could've been upstairs?

I always assumed it was for dramatic purposes. to kind of throw you off a bit if you don't know the story and yea keep things interesting/suspenseful.
I always thought maybe it was a family member or his wife, but maybe someone who is sick or elderly. When they pull up to the house their is another car in the driveway.

It's definitely the one really typical movie moment and done for dramatic purposes I think

The point of the scene was to show Graysmith's paranoia and also his sudden realisation that he's alone with someone and anything could happen to him.

It was definitely a scene created for dramatic purposes. But it's a great film moment.
