Personally I think seasons 4 and 5 were the best. The first 5 seasons overall were really great, I just think that the show peaked during season 5.
Season 6 and 7 were still good but I didn't really like the direction the story went in after that. The plot really went downhill after lily and marshall moved away and stopped hanging out with the gang (you could tell the writers were beginning to run out of ideas)
8 and 9 were OK but overall I never go back to rewatch any of those episodes really. Season 9 especially, was drug out, boring, and felt stretched too thin. It seemed like the writers in the board room were like "hey, how much filler can we add in to accommodate more episodes so we can milk one more season out of this thing"

Season 5 hands down was the strongest season. The first 5 and a half seasons were great, but 5 by far was the strongest in terms of episodes and writing.

The middle seasonsAround 4 th 5th season.Where already know and like the charecters (unlike the first 2 seasons)And the stories were still fresh and not dragged out (unlike 8 th 9 the season)
