Nathan's mistake was not understanding people. He understood his android female sex slaves, but he did not profile Caleb well enough. Or he should have controlled Caleb's behavior a little more.
Also, if he had allowed Ava out of her room more often, she would have empathy for humans more. She only had empathy for others like herself.
It's a creepy movie. The stabbing scene always gives me the creeps. They just stick the knife in like his body was a knife holder.
