    Why not?

      Gimme a break.
People are only allowed to hook up with other people of their same ancestry? Where is that a rule?
Usually people connect with whoever is around them. New York has people from all over the planet, so not a huge stretch to have a mixed ethnicity couple. It may be weird in Norway but not New York.
People of African ancestry have been in New York since it was a Dutch colony. Why is it strange to have a brown skinned detective? It may have been weird back in 1930 when there was more discrimination in hiring, but not in the 2000s.
To sum up. No, it doesn't seem weird to have Erica be involved with David. Or for Detective Mercer to be who he is.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Hmmm, I didn't know they became an item in this film. I don't even think they kissed, yet, someone saw fit to create a forum suggesting they were boyfriend/girlfriend. Even if they were, so what?

They obviously cast Naveen Andrews in the role to
          crank off bigots.

A move like this needs both multi-ethnic good guys and bad guys otherwise it'll have negative racial overtones. The fact that one cop is white and the other black is no accident.

I agree - I thought of course she has a non-white boyfriend and the hero cop is black, so the film makers aren't called racist for having all the crims either Hispanic or black.

Anyway, Naveen Andrews is Indian (I think), but I see Indian and Middle Eastern doctors all the time. They are quite common in the medical field in the US. Maybe that's another reason they cast him?
Plus he's super gorgeousjust a side note. 😉

[Good move to ignore that one. Anyone who uses a backward, anachronistic term like 'black buck' is either an elderly bigot who longs for the 'good old days' and bad romance paperbacks set on plantations or an updated but reactionary

.everything has to be "multicultural" which to be honest
                        makes me sick.
You found this story comedic somehow? Sorry to hear about your illness but don't despairthere's an outside chance you will outgrow you backward attitude. Very sad.

I wish there had been a larger part for him instead of him dying off right in the beginning. I think he is a wonderful actor.

After mostly sleeping through the 'English Patient' four times, I thought his on screen time was appropriate.

Yeah right. There are lots of scenarios you don't mention though; like black vs. hispanic and such. The Cambodian actor from The Killing Fields was killed by a black guy, but do I think that all blacks are criminals? Nope. Timothy McVeigh was a white dude should I think that all whites are terrorists?
Truth is that crime strikes anyone. Minorities aren't specifically targeting "all those white people", just people. Period.

Ah..this all sounds ridiculous..it's not like Jodi and Naveen or Terrence were hooking up in "real life". She doesn't even swing that way from rumors.
The color wasn't important in the casting choice, it was the actor and their ability. I thought it was very well casted.
Do you Think Nevin's character in I am Legend was written as a black man from a book in the by Richard Matheson???
You need a good actor to carry a film..color need not be consideredanother good one would be Denzel's little lauded movie, Man on Fire
"But it's not for eating. It's for lookin through."

"I just thought it was random that Foster had a brown boyfriend. I know, I know, it doesn't matter or anything and it actually works with Howard being brown (or a light skinned black man, call it whatever) and reminding Foster of her boyfriend, but I also saw it as a random sort of casting choice. "
Does it really matter? I'm surprised since you say you are brown.
Just when you think we get over the black remarks I hope we are not going to start on brown.
I hope that people don't replace a colour when they may really focusing on religion.

Maybe, same for Howard too. I remember she really wanted to play Detective Mercer, after seeing his performances in Crash and Hustle & Flow.
