If you look at a few of Neil Jordan's other films you'll see that he's been bringing in interracial relationships since the 80's to name two, Mona Lisa had Bob Hoskins falling for a black prostitute played by Cathy Tyson and The Crying Game had a white man, Stephen Rea falling for a black transgender person played by Jaye Davidson. Both are amazing films.

The choice of the fiancee and the detective as being of color was definitely NOT random. I'm not gonna say why, though, except to quote Foster's CBS interview in which she commented that the character's boyfriend acted as her body and without him she became a bit of a ghost. It'd be wrong (and offensive to me) to write off this crucial plot element to political correctness.
I'd be really disappointed to think that the director was too subtle and I would prefer to think that many of the viewers are not very bright. -

I'm quite happy to see such couples with no comment or reason givenit signifies acceptance by a large segment of the public.

It was good to see a film show an interracial couple as normal and not a big dramatic issue. Also the pairing of a non-white boyfriend and a white girlfriend is more realistic, that is what is usually seen in the real world. Hollywood and mainstream film tend to be shy about having the man be the non-white in interracial couples.

It is more common to see interracial couples on TV here in the UK I think. I haven't seen that many American movies or shows with an interracial couple as the main characters.
Foster had better chemistry with Howard though than she did with Andrews. -

Why not?
Although I didn't really get the love connection between the 2 that had nothing to do with the diverse colors, think it had alot to do with Jodie Foster recently coming out as a lesbian more than anything else She just didn't click sexually with him, or with Terrence Howard which I think was meant to be (Terrence called her cute and they went out for a 'date' and stuff).
