The thing with age of ultron is I think people were expecting rightly or wrong depending on your point of view , some game changing masterpiece , that would turn the entire universe on its head , when that didn't happen people were dissapointed . what we got dare I say it was a typical marvel movie , that didn't stray too much from the formular as people were hoping expecting . I thought it was fine , I actually liked it more on second viewing , but I could see why some fans and commentators alike were somewhat underwhelmed .
I don't think it's a bad movie at all in fact I actually think it's one of their better one's but people were expecting so much from this movie , I am not at all surprised by the mixed to postive response I don't think it could/ would have ever met the expectations that were placed on that movie . I think it's marvels strangest movie yet and that's is saying something after guardians.
Conversely with antman I think some were expecting somewhat of a train wreck , after all the behind the scenes drama , the unusual casting choices , and apparently somewhat underwhelming trailers , I haven't actually seen any trailers. , I make a habit of not seeing any trailers of movies I plan to see , but I honestly think that maybe people were not expecting too much from this one I don't know time will tell I guess but the response so far appears mostly positive , then again early reactions usually are.
I generally like marvel movies though. , yes some are of a better quality than others , but even mid range marvel , Thor , Thor dark world , iron man 2 at least Imo are still never anything less than watchable . -

I can promise this, ANT-MAN is going to get a pass from critics & fans because of the action scenes. The simple reason is that the action scenes are probably the only thing left over aside from casting that is heavily Edgar Wright.
Action scenes in blockbusters require tons of effects work & time to get right so action scenes are generally done in pre-viz before shooting even begins. Wright had all his action scenes mapped out perfectly before he left the project last year. When Peyton Reed signed on I'm pretty sure most of his job was just connecting the action scenes together in a narrative & not to mess with them that much.
So yeah, ANT-MAN is going to be a fun movie with some killer action scenes. But, I'll always be a little bit bummed when I think about it because it could have been a GREAT movie if Edgar Wright had been allowed to do his own thing.

Plus I'm guessing the bigger issue for Wright was that Marvel wanted to rein in his style & way of filmmaking so it wouldn't stand out too much when compared against the rest of the MCU. The Cinematic Universe is a lot like a TV series now where there's a set style guideline for how the film are shot & done. The filmmakers can put whatever they want in front of the camera but they're all shot, edited & structured in the same format. I would argue for all the talk of next year's DOCTOR STRANGE being a "weird movie" I'm sure we can predict how the movie will look & feel in theaters.
Wright has a very unique & specific style that's identified with him as a filmmaker. That style was probably 100% at odds with the style manual that Marvel is using for their movies. Wright even wanted to shoot Ant-Man on 35mm & it would have been the first Marvel movie to be shot on film since the first Thor but Marvel nixed that (Ant-Man is shot on the digital Arri Alexa like all their movies have since The Avengers).
Whatever went on behind the scenes, Marvel wanted to rein in Edgar Wright enough that he would have been making a movie that wasn't his. Makes sense that he left.
But, as I said, when he did leave he left behind those action scenes that were already storyboarded & designed. Ant-Man is going to have some great action.

Wright was hired to finnish the movie around 2008. If he hadn't broken his contract, and went for at world's end first, he might have been allowed to keep the movie in the way he originaly envisioned it. He forced Marvel studio's hand by constantly stalling. If the movie had been out in 2008, it wouldn't have had so many parts of the MCU to take into account. It would have been one of the parts of the MCU to take into account for following movies. but noooooooo. Mr Wright is so bloody awesome, everyone has to stop what they're doing and wait for him to actualy feel like doing what he's being paid for

I think you're underestimating Reed's job a bit. While it's true that Edgar Wright would have story boarded and pre-vizzed a lot of the action, Adam McKay said that during re-writes he and Rudd:

added some new action beats
. I grew up on Marvel Comics so the geek in me was in heaven that
I got to add a giant action sequence to the movie
; I was so excited. So we did, we added some cool new action. Theres a lot thats already in there from what Edgar did, theres a lot of dialogue and character still in there We just shaped the whole thing, we just tried to streamline it, make it cleaner, make it a little bigger, a little more aggressive
So we know that not all the action in the movie was crafted by Wright and even scenes he designed may have been tweaked, Reed would have had a large part in this process. We also know that the micro-photography on which scenes were designed wasn't done by Wright but Reed and then there's also the fact that there's a big difference between a storyboard on paper and actually bringing that to the screen. If the action's good then Reed would have required his own skill to do that, not just Wright's notes. So, while I'm sure that Wright's pre-production had a heavy influence on the film and action, credit should be given to Peyton Reed where credits due. He would have had to do just as much heavy lifting. -

Director James Gunn said as much himself. He's calling it the best since Iron Man.
His full Ant-Man statement
"Ant-Man may just be my favorite Marvel film since Jon Favreau's Iron Man (well, maybe excluding one film to which I'm partial). Honestly, the movie is a complete blast! I was so happy after seeing it. It's never boring for a second and it's hilarious and warm throughout. It doesn't get caught up in the webbing of its own science-fiction concept like so many movies do these days, remaining simple and elegant. It's a part of the Marvel universe without being ruled by that fact. Paul Rudd is nuanced and charming and funny and is a surprisingly natural fit as a modern superhero (side-fact - Paul must be a nice guy, because he and I dated the same girl in college, and yet I still love him). Michael Pea KILLS IT - this movie is going to make him a huge star. My old pal Judy Greer (she was Deadly Girl to my Minute Man in The Specials (film) many moons ago) is great in a small role. And Michael Douglas is awesome. I think all of Peyton Reed's years directing have led him to making something as deft and nimble and joyous as this; he did an incredible job.
And, despite Edgar Wright's parting from Marvel, his spirit is felt through the entire project, and there is no doubt everyone owes him a huge debt of gratitude.
I left the theater incredibly happy. So often I see movies by people I love which are just okay - it's great to love a movie as much as I love the people who made it.
This is a photo of me and David Dastmalchian at the premiere after-party last night - David plays a Russian hacker in the movie and nearly every single line out of his mouth gets a laugh. He's getting on a plane this morning to fly back to Colombia to resume filming his other movie - my movie, The Belko Experiment.

I would post it here but it contains a few f bombs.
She saw the film and the world premier and loved it. Said it was here favourite movie in phase two alongside Captain America The Winter Soldier. She loves both of them for different reasons.
She says usually Marvel villains suck. She called (Ronan s***). She says but Yellowjacket is one of the better Marvel Villains. Cross motivations make sense and he is connected to the other characters.
She says the script and cast are great. She loves the ants which are adorable. -
