Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rocky Balboa

    Bob_Fett — 15 years ago(October 27, 2010 08:45 AM)

I've probably watched RB about a half-dozen times, but ever sine the first viewing, I couldn't help but take note of how many times Rocky says "I appreciate it." Did anyone else notice this? I've never taken count, but I'm curious as to why Stallone wrote that phrase in the script so many times.

It was pretty noticeable, the amount of "appreciation" expressed by ol' Rock. My take is that it's there to underscore Rocky as a humble character - even after all he's done he doesn't feel entitled to anything and perhaps at this point in his life more than at any other time is grateful for any favor or consideration given to him. I have no doubt it was a deliberate choice, even if the meaning is different from my interpretation.

Beautiful film i really do love the rocky movies, well one, two and Balboa. I think its just there to show Rocks use of language. if you notice he says it a few times in the first and second movie also. He says ?Yknow" alot too.

I think they overplayed his stupidity a bit in the film.
            "Jamaica.ahhh European?"
            Cringeworthy writing.

Are you kidding me? It plays off as Rocky is the ONLY person in the movie with any goddamned sense at all!
As for the appreciative lines, Rocky does say it a bit in the original movie, which is probably what Sly was aiming at.

Watch Rockys speech to his son and tell me he is stupid. in this movie he is very wise, and you don't have to be fully articulate to be a clever person, there are many forms of intelligence. With Rockys use of language it makes him more believable and more likeable, the Rocky we fell in love with in the original.

Do not confuse ignorance with lack of intelligence. He seemed very smart to me (take the speech with his son, and his speech upon being denied a license) - almost too smart considering post-brain damage Rocky in V

I honestly thought I was the only person to notice this lol.. I am a huge Rocky and Stallone fan and him saying "I appreciate it" is not just limited to Rocky films . His characters say it in many of the other scripts he's written and also starred in.. I didn't notice the whole "appreciate it" thing until Rocky Balboa myself .. but after watching lots of movies again with stallone in them since then I have noticed in practically every film he says this.
and another bizarre thing is , I talk to some people online who are massive Rocky Stallone fans from around the world and they also say I appreciate it a lot . I have never asked them directly whey they say it . but since they are massive rocky stallone fans its obvious they got it off him.
seriously next time you watch a movie with stallone in it , you just listen and at some point he will say I appreciate it

Maybe in 5 a bit, but only a bit, and not in any of the others at all. Well, maybe 2 some, but it was perfect!

That is one of my favorite parts of the film. I wouldn't call it stupidity, mole like lack of knowledge. He didn't have much schooling, and he really must think that Jamaica is in Europe. What could have been interpreted as a joke, showcases Sly's talent as a screen writer when Rocky follows up with: "Was you on a cruise ship, or somethin'?" I love that Marie doesn't correct him.
I eat things that would make a billy goat puke.

One of the things I hated about III and IV is the characterization of Rocky. He basically lost his Philly accent in certain scenes and his speaking and sentence structure was so much clearer and intelligent. It was almost like Sly was playing a different character at times. No Rocky jokes or lingo or "hey, yo", "appreciate it", "you know".
Rocky, Rocky II, Rovky V, and Rocky Balboa had his character back on point.

He becomes more of a "snob" with more bling in 3 and 4 so the change in dialect probably went along with that.

Nicely said. Rocky had been at the top, and had come crushing to the bottom again. He is thankful for every opportunity that comes his way, and knows nothing is guaranteed.
