I disagree, i think 7.0 or 6.9 Is the perfect way to summarize this movie It's a great thriller but it just doesn't have

For a thriller, this movie was great. I gave it an 8/10 and it is well deserved. Now, that does not mean it belongs on the IMDB Top #250 just because it gets a high rating. For a thriller/suspense movie, this movie was great but not a memorable and amazing film to remember for decades. Plus, IMDB top #250 is a joke.

Agreed 100% with OP. This movie was so riddled with the usual clichs you see in pretty much EVERY American teen movie, and there was not a thing about this movie that was original or even that interesting. The bikini scenes took the cake. My eyes were rolling so hard they nearly disappeared into my skull.

Some people just dont understand what IMDB is about

Good mainstream movies get the best scores because it is the mainstream audience that grades the movies. It is not intellectual movie experts
Why do you think that movies with no depth like Transformers, Iron Man, Sex and the City etc. etc. etc. etc. earn that much money. -

It deserves 7, at least IMO. True, it has a lot of horror/teen movies cliches but the movie is actually quite well done. Plus, it's Shia's best performance so far, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing that part with such an energy and enthusiasm. And one more thing, a lot of movies especially in the last 10-20 years, no matter how good they are, borrowed something from older movies (mostly better) but that doesn't mean those new movies can't be great. It's same thing with Disturbia - it's a good old apple pie that we all ate many times, it has familiar but still good taste, after all it's all about quality ingredients and Disturbia has those.

Are IMDb ratings inexact, subjective, skewed? Yes, they are, but IMHO not more so than our own ratings. I freely admit that the ratings I have assigned to films at IMDb are at least in part influenced by the films' subject matters, the cast and crew, the genre, all of which have nothing to do with the quality of a film. As much as we try to rate objectively, we are able to do so only up to a point. I'd judge that ratings at IMDb have an error rate of +/- 1.5 or 1.8 and new releases 2.5 and higher, for the simple fact that for many the film is fresh in their minds. The IMDb Top 250 list seems to reflect this nicely, with new releases finding their way to the top only to drop back after some time as elapsed.
I have never found ratings a good indicator for deciding to watch or forgo a film but even if these ratings were as objective as possible, it wouldn't help much to pinpoint films I would personally enjoy (but at least filter out the most obvious trash, i.e. a 3/10 rated film would only be to my liking if I matched my alcohol level to that value, but even then )
For the film in question, I would give it a 5 to 5.5, good production values and competent craftsmanship but unimaginative storyline, 2D characters, B-movie cast (with an exception) and unmemorable dialogue.

Concerning many movies, my rating is always above by up to 1/1.5 point.
Most movies having between 6.5 and 7.5, I give 8, those more around 7.5/8 I give 8.5 or 9.
Recent examples:
Les Miserables
7.7 - I gave 9
Zero Dark Thirty
7.5 - I gave 8
Django Unchained
8.8 - I gave 9
Special 26
7.7 - I gave 8.5
It is actually because our ratings are personal and my 8 doesn't mean the same as someone else's 8. To some people 8 means great. To me it simply means good.
But strangely, for some movies I'm way higher. Take
Bachelorette
, I gave a 9. I thought the movie would have a 7.something here and I don't get the 5.2
I think on this one people "hated" on the movie for being female oriented and showing women drinking and doing drugs as a comedy. I'm not at all a feminist but I really think this is the reason, and that the low rating is not about the movie in itself. Come on, how can this have a 5 and
The Hangover
almost an 8?!
Also, take the movie
LOL
. It has a 3 only because of Miley haters. It is the EXACT same film as the original french version (same screenplay, same writer, even same director), and the french version has a 6. It doesn't make sense.
So for some films, the ratings can be very flawed because influenced by other things than how the film is.
So about
Disturbia
, it's been a long time since I saw it, but I think I'd give an 8. I think the movie delivers what it was supposed to. It has the thrills, the rhythmn, the entertainment, also it's not dumb (uh those thinking it's silly obviously have NEVER seen a silly movie).
It doesn't stand out or has anything particularly memorable, it's not deep or anything, so I wouldn't go higher than 8.
The fact that it has a 6.9 seems normal to me, since as usual I'm 1 point above -

5 is harsh, it's an entertaining film and I think most people who watch it would enjoy it. The IMDB Top 250 is more of a guideline to people who want to check out some highly rated films based on the percentage of people who enjoyed it, rather than a definitive list of the best movies ever made. There may be better films than The Shawshank Redemption, but it has a 9.2 rating because it appeals to nearly everyone who watches it.

I know haha. It's ridiculous really. So many decent movies are rated like 5/10 on iMDB and yet this gets 7/10 (6.9/10 now).
What exactly made this film so compelling? Was it Shia LaBouf, who is an al right funny actor? The plot, which consisted of 1 minor twist, and the rest was pretty straight forward? The dull cookie-cutter action scenes? Seriously, what was it?
Should be 6/10 at the most. -

It's probably a film mainly for teens but that's not to say that it's cheap trashy entertainment - the main character is one that young people can empathise with and relate to. It's got a lot of comedy, drama and thrills as well but unlike most horror thrillers there's a good balance between them and they're done in the right way.

the movie is entertaining enough, you're all just Shia's haters and he did a fine job here as well, stop complaining.

7/10 is a pretty god reationg, it is not a mssterpiece 10/10 and missing some thing, but the story was supensefull and the acting googd, some joke could be cuttede of therefor 07/10 and is also what i gave it.
