Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Saw III

The fact Saw III aims to make you empathize with Jigsaw and his sadistic ways is a step in a completely bizarre direction. This isnt like Freddy Kreuger being transformed into a pun slinging anti hero- nothing here is played for laughs, which makes the creative teams intent on making you empathize with him feel crushingly dispiriting. The movie depicts horrors, yet never becomes horrifying. It is interesting only when viewed from an academic perspective. You could easily write a thesis about how 21st century society has become so jaded, even the most brutal forms of punishment presented in Saw III cant muster up the slightest scare.
