i would agree with you rounder53, except for the fact that i think that rain is a pretty good actor so even though he is a big name, i think he did a really good job. i can't be the only person who really enjoyed this moviemaybe i am.

A large percentage of actors across Asia are multi talented, or atleast try to be. There isn't the stigma that Western audiences have about people crossing careers.

So, you're saying that casting a good-looking guy who's famous makes for a mainstream movie? This thing seemed about as far as conceivable from the American mainstream. It does have a touch of Tim burtonesque imagery in it, but I'd honestly list is as Tim at his absolute best. This is up there with Beetlejuice and Batman for me as far as sheer awesome, utterly bizarre styles of filmaking goit IS a Romantic Comedy so it's not brutally violent or anything like Park Chan-wook's "Thirst" or "Oldboy" was, but it's just as good as far as I'm concerned as either of those.

Chan-wook made this film for his 13 year old daughter who is just getting into film. She declared it the second best film ever made after Pirates of the Carribbean.
Mainstream yes. That was the point.

I thought the film was a little Tim burton. It felt like it was going to be, but it just did not go towards gothic enough to be too much like a Tim Burton creation. I did, however, feel that the film was just being wierd for wierds sake, and for that reason I could not get past the bit where she sits in the hiccuping clock. It just seemed like the actors were told to be wierd so that the film seems unique.

I don't see Tim Burton in this at all. He's goth, this was odd. Besides, this movie made me say "cute" about fifty time.
And I think Rain is a fine actor. I loved him in Speed Racer and I loved him in this. I'm really looking forward to Ninja Assassin too.

Burton CAN be goth-like at points, but have you ever seen Big Fish? That's about as far from Goth as you can get and it's possibly my all time favorite Burton flickMars Attacks! and James and the Giant Peach as well

Tim Burton can't direct. He's point and shoot, and his "weird" is a very generic and mainstream weird. It's cookie cutter goth. To compare Park Chan Wook to him shows a complete lack of understanding of film and a total showing of your limited film tastes. Or at the very least limited films watched.
This was another excellent genre mixer. Very sweet and innocent love story, surrounded by very bizarre and interesting characters. Rain was an excellent choice, if only for his yodeling scene. This film showed he can act, which made his performances in his two Hollywood ventures showcase the complete lack of talent of his directors and not himself.
It wasn't as "disturbing" as his other films, but it didn't need to be. Nor should be. It was a romantic comedy. Very unique romantic comedy. That still managed to be a bit dark and twisted.
Some say, boy you're always teasin, I think you best be leavin.
