yeah, it really sucks
I saw it in 2010 and I thought it was awful. I'm not watching the extended edition, after reading that the more detailed introduction makes it better well, it still sucks. I don't know if I can make it through this again.

and yet it is the highest-grossing Cameron movie to date (and also the highest-grossing movie of all-time overall).
Although Avatar is not my favourite film from Cameron, I still prefer Titanic and the first 2 Terminator movies he directed, but you cannot deny the fact that Avatar is still Cameron's most financially successful movie
by far

Since that's a feat that only a handful of other films have accomplished, most of which are iconic masterpieces - like GWTW, Star Wars, Jaws and Titanic, yes, that kind of success does show that Avatar is a great film.

The Wizard of Oz doesn't look or feel that realistic either. That doesn't change how beautiful, effective and awesome it is as a film. That's what Avatar is. The Wizard of Oz of our time. It's the greatest technical achievement in film history and it is perfectly crafted to transport audiences into the colorful, cartoon-like world of Pandora much like what Victor Fleming and Judy Garland did for audiences back in 1939.
Cameron doesn't have to make your kind of film every time. All that matters is that he bring his craftsmanship and dignity to each project. And you can see that he did that in spades in every shot and scene of Avatar.
Get off your soapbox while I play you a tune on the tiniest violin. -

that is a matter of opinion, I think Avatar IS a 'masterpiece' in terms of its grand use of special effects at the timethough the story itself is very cliche, but this film's main selling point is the beautiful special effects, which was considered 'revolutionary' at the time.

I can't believe this is the highest grossing movie of all time. Why were we fooled back in 2009 into thinking this was a good-looking moving? You are right, it looks extremely artificial.I haven't even touched on the writing, characters, or acting. The strength supposedly effects alone are enough to criticize this movie. It's a really bad looking movie.
