it's a long and articulated story, the runtime is absolutely necessary.
but there's no bombastic action, shaky cam scenes or epileptic editing. It's an adult movie, made for adults and not 15 years old with the attention span of a cockroach -

I saw this in the theater, and I was completely sucked in. The music, sound, visuals, all screamed class. And it's frickin Denzel Washington.
Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness. -

I think I saw this in the theaters. But just watched the extended DVD cut with 19 more minutes. Its one of those real stories that takes time to build up to the big finale.
FWIW: you have direction, an all star cast and compelling characters to watch. The cop who became a lawyer and prosecuted his own case, how f'ing cool is that.
Another way to look at it it's very comparable to Scarface from 1983. Another great director and cast. Although there's more of a happier ending to the drug kingpin here. -

I love slow-paced long films and gangster movies but for some reason, I couldn't really get into American Gangster. It's unnecessarily long without enough character developement and relationships. It's easy to lose interest and get distracted from time to time, the story doesn't give you enough to justify it's length and slow pace.
American Gangster is not a bad movie, just aims too high without having the potential for it. It tries hard to be like The Godfather; unfortunantly it doesn't work. -

Personaly it's my all time favorite Gangster movie.
No, it doesn't get slow.
Just to give a factual example: "There were 360 scenes filmed in over 180 different locations."
And whne you see it, you'll see.
I loooved it. I saw it many times.
Now, I have a 17 nephew, and I showed her "goodfellas", "Godfahter" and "Amercian Gangster"
She likes "goodfellas"
She thought the GODFATHER was boring..
as for American Gangster, she like it very much, but was dissapointed there wasn't as much Violence as "goodfellas". That's the only thing.
It's violent, btw.
But it's more about the Story.
I highly advise it. -

You'd love it. Great story, and most importantly, very proper. No nonsense like "'bro' is black" or "'bro' is white" slang here. In fact they say it's Italian, because the only character who use it are mobsters. Proper movie
