Detective Trupo(Brolin's character) was a total douchebag corrupt cop. He threatened a dangerous man like Frank Lucas on his wedding day. He also stole heroin from the evidence room and diluted it and sold it back to gangsters and hence controlled the market. He is a major threat to the organized crime world. Couldn't they have just found some way to just snuff him if he was such a threat?

Dirty or not, killing a detective would've started a war and all fingers would've immediately pointed at Lucas and his organization.

here in ireland a detective was murdered by the IRA
his name was Jerry McCabe
to this day IRA supporters say he was "killed" it was "manslaughter"

Most of what they showed his character doing was Hollywood b.s.
It wasn't real. There wasn't even a suicide. Just a fyi. That why the character got away with what he did. It was fiction.
