I am rewatching Dexter on Netflix, for probably like the 3rd or 4th time. I LOVE this show. But something that just drives me nuts about it, is Rita!!
She was okay in the first season and you understood why she was so quiet, reserved and damages due to everything that Paul put her through. But in the 2nd season she becomes needy, whiney and so incredibly naggy it's unreal.
Yes Dexter is a serial killer and his affair with Lila hurt Rita, but for goodness sakesshe hit the damn jackpot as far as being a single mom goes. She met a man who has a good job, does EVERYTHING she asks him to do(come over at the last minute, bring milk, bread, pick up her kids when she's at worketc.) A man who takes care of her kids 100% like they are his own and doesn't once complain to her about doing it. She gets fired from her job for being a tw@t and a crappy employee and Dexter doesn't even blink about taking care of her and her kids to the point where she doesn't even have to get another job. And ALL she does is complain about EVERYTHING if he's not doing exactly what she wants the moment she wants it.
During the first episode of the 4th season when Dexter crashes his car because he's so tired from work, his dark passenger, and taking care of the baby and she still is asking him to take Harrison the moment he steps in the door or go get medicine from the pharmacy. She's a damn stay at home mother with 2 children that are in school most of the daywhy can't she take her lazy ass to the pharmacy? Why does she push Harrison off on Dexter the moment he gets home? He doesn't even get 2 minutes to unwind before she's throwing that baby in his face like she's got such a rough life and busy day that she just can't take it anymore.
Then she kisses the stupid neighbor who's face looks like a toe and is happy that Dexter hit him because she's got 2 guys fighting over her. Rita Just plain old sucks!!!!! I really dislike her character. She doesn't count her blessings at all, all she does is nag Dexter in her stupid soft spoken bullsht voice. I was so happy she got killed off. -

Rita isn't happy that two guys are fighting over her, she's happy Dexter cares about her enough to do something. She loves Dexter and if he doesn't care that she kissed someone else than what does that say about their marriage?
Remember in the first season when Dexter said every time he has sex with someone they realize he's weird and missing something inside and take off? Rita didn't at first because she was missing something as well. Once she starts to recover from Paul she's able to see that part of Dexter that's missing. She loves him and wants a real relationship with him that has an emotional and personal level to it, not just something utilitarian about paying the bills and buying stuff for the kids.
When Dexter realizes she just wants to talk with him about normal every day things he couldn't muster up anything to say. She was lonely and wanted to know he truly cared about her. He never said he loved her.

Rita's a pretty sympathetic figure. She's a single mom and domestic abuse survivor who is conned by a serial killer who uses her for social cover and ultimately contributes to her violent death. If the story was told from the point of view of anybody other than Dexter, we'd feel horrible for her.
Instead Rita gets a bad rap because it's almost impossible to create a likable wife character for an anti-hero character unless she's his partner in crime. (Citation: Skyler White, Carmela Soprano, Margaret Thompson, etc, etc, etc.) Because either she, like Rita, is oblivious to her husband's criminal behavior and is used mostly to create obstacles ("Hey honey, could you stop and buy some milk?") to ramp up dramatic tension and/or illustrate the main protagonist's double life, and, OR she does know about the crimes, like Skyler and Carmela, and occasionally contributes to protect her family despite crises of conscience, and everybody hates her because she's a hypocrite.

Yeah, she kinda bugged me in the third and fourth seasons but nobody should have to die like that especially in front of her infant son. I always felt kinda bad about how she left the show. I get her death had to particularly brutal in order to help "fuel" the fifth season but still sad.

Whenever people complain about Rita's nagging, it's like they forget that Dexter gave her every reason to. Dexter did nothing but lie to her and deflected when she'd ask him to be open with her. People like the OP want to put the blame on Rita yet give Dexter a pass. The reason she was happy Dexter hit the neighbor was because Dexter showed no feelings about it when she was talking with him beforehand in their bed.
This OP's argument is dumb. "Rita should be thankful for Dexter and shouldn't complain at all since he's emotionless and doesn't care."
