Finally watched the finale, worst series ending ever.

It starts to become evident when a show does not know which direction to take when it overstays it's welcome. If I remember correctly, Dexter was supposed to end one or two seasons before it actually did. The Producers should have followed their gut. As with many good or great shows, some seasons are going to be more appealing than others. I agree with the majority that the last season was a mess, however, it was made worse by allowing the last 3 minutes. If they had just stopped it when he was in the boat with Debra, it would have been much better than the ending that was force fed us.
I think the point was to show he was still going to kill but relocated so he could better get away with it. Even though he finally felt something, he just wanted Hannah & Harrison to both be safe. Not that he would harm them but because he needed to continue his "work" and did not want them to get caught up in any possible fallout if he were to get caught. It was a pure selfless act on Dex's part to send them both out of the country and give both the gift of the other. Hannah got what she wanted more than anythinga child, and Harrison got what he needed mosta Mother! -

I agree; I think it was a decent ending. I think Dexter's ending up in the NW is an homage to the Tooth Fairy episode when he says something about all serial killers ending up in Portland, OR. Maybe Dexter removed himself to an isolated existence because he no longer has "The Code" to guide him. Or, maybe he is just on a different journey in different scenery with his Dark Passenger.
I think Dexter ditched Hannah and Harrison because they are the only people he loves (or, at least, feels some positive emotion toward). Perhaps he surmised that his presence in their lives would have destroyed them just like everyone else who cared for him.
I kind of get the feeling that the ending, as vague as it was, isn't Dexter's final chapter (no sequels, please). He may just be laying low and hitting the pause button until he can re-group with Hannah and Harrison. -

I actually loved the ending and this is still my favorite series of all time. For a minute, when I was watching the final episodes, I thought they might actually end with Dexter, Hannah and Harrison all escaping to Argentina and living a peaceful normal life. THAT would have been a really bad ending! I think I would have felt a sense of something really ending if Dexter would have died, and I rooted for him the whole way through. I didn't want to see his character end. I don't know if that makes me a psychopath or what, but I didn't want to see him go down. A lot of people thought that it was ridiculous that he put Deb's body in the water where he put all of his victims, but I thought it was symbolic and fitting, since he finally realized that she was also one of his victims, although indirectly. I think that no matter how they ended it, there was going to be a large chunk of fans disappointed. Just my take.

People keep saying this, almost like they're just agreeing with consensus and not thinking for themselves. You people never truly explain what's so bad about it. I liked it, I thought it was a perfectly fitting end. Dexter acted recklessly and carelessly and got Deb killed, which really disturbed him to his core. The whole "lumberjack" thing is overblown by everyone, I found it a poignant and subtle reference to the fact that his self-punishment was working with chainsaws, the same device that caused him to begin his serial killing life.
That's putting it mildly, OO7

EXTREMELY let down by the ending of this series. As much as I love blood and gore, the whole thing with taking Deb right out of the hospital was very far fetched, regardless of the surrounding circumstances with the storm and the whole "I'm dead let me consume a new life" thing was just disappointing. I would have been happier with Dexter being a selfish psychopath and moving to Argentina and having a 'normal' life.Which two serial killers raising a son, that life could never be normal.

I had a serious problem with the direction the series took in its last few seasons, relying on spectacle and cheap shocks over character development and story arcs. I mean, I love Dexter, but let's be honest-this was never going to be a GREAT show in the sense that The Sopranos or The Wire were great shows. But, at the very least, it seemed headed in the direction of good and solid. But it really lost its way. The fault with the last season (and especially the last few episodes) is that Dexter uncharacteristically turned on Deb. He didn't just dismiss her or ignore her; he completely beep her. And while I can handle Dexter not getting caught or paying for his crimes in some way, I cannot stand for that. The entire crux of the show was his relationship with Deborah. Are we honestly to believe that he would completely forsake his relationship with her for beep Hannah? Unlike Rita or Lumen, there was nothing even remotely interesting about that character. Yet we're supposed to believe that she's the love of Dexter's life. Ridiculous.

I was so hard pressed to expect the finale to be so bad that I actually found to be much better than I expected.
After all, all made sense and it was highly dramatic.
Maybe there was a kind of MPAA's moralistic touch to it, but maybe it was just convenient that it ended like it did. Spoilers ahead.
I didn't like Deb's death. It felt kind of forced, but the writers needed a convincing reason to make Dexter abandon Hannah and his son and return to his old psychotic ways. We see in the very last scene, his eyes looking into the camera, that he remained or returned to his old self and will continue to live as a serial killer. What wasn't clear is if he will continue with Harry's Code. But to me, in spite of Deb's death, which I think was way too sad and got me down, it wrapped it up nicely with a touch of realism. How many serial killers would really turn into average mild-mannered self-controlled citizens?
Overall it wasn't bad as a finale and neither was the season. I still don't understand why so much hatred. -

Yes I didn't think the ending was all that bad. Season 8 had become over the top and silly. Were there any writers left? Gone were long reaching story arcs. Characters came and went with no real purpose. And the main players went in circles. LaGuerta's crusade? It went on and on. Still - it was one of the better plots.
I don't see everyone listing bad series endings for literally every major show shown. I mean - what is a god ending look like?
Had it ended with Dex and Deb in the boat we would have had a more poetic ending. -

I am sorry, but you are getting your seasons mixed up. LaGuerta died at the end of season 7, which is also the season she was on her crusade to proves that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher, not Doakes. She was not alive for season 8, which did have a season long arc with the Brain Surgeon Killer, granted, he wasn't the best serial killer in the show, I guess it was too hard to spend time developing his story line while at the same time trying to run the parallel story line of the Federal Marshal and Deb's boss trying to track down Hannah.

My daughter and I have come up with several different interpretations of the final moments of season 8.
Personally, I'm sticking to Dexter having had a psychotic breakdown after Rita is killed, and everything else you see are his fantasies from inside a mental facility! Takes care of the increasingly bizarre plots and season 8 being everyone's least-favourite. -

I can't believe so many people here actually liked the ending. The whole Deb thing was really forced, there were any number of ways they could have made that seem natural, but instead it felt like they basically just said "well, it's time for her to die, soooooooooooooo, now she's dead." And the whole thing with Dexter just cruising into that storm is bad enough, I don't agree with that direction for the character at all, but to then undo that with the final scene is just stupid. What's the point of building up that death wish, having him act on it, and then showing him alive and for no apparent reason content with his place in life at the end? It's just really sloppy writing. When you build towards something you shouldn't then negate it with zero explanation as the final scene in the show.
