      I think this is not an actual name but more a nickname.
      There is a russian word "" or "" (zec) which means the prisoner or man who was in prison.

                  Also, "the Zec" is played by Werner Herzog and has most of his fingers on both hands missing, some of them due to frostbite.
                  Maurice Herzog is a French mountaineer who led an expedition to the Annapurna in the 50's and lost most of his fingers to frostbite.

                      As they explain in the film, albeit better in the book, his name when literally translated means 'prisoner man', as in a man of prison, a man of jails and bars and cells, a man whose life is prison.
