Hugh Jackman does sound like a great choice if not Cruise (who I very much liked in the movie, regardless of the admitted fact that he's not even anywhere close to matching the physical description of the novels). Jackman is a great actor but he can also carry an action movie as the lead, unlike say Liev Shcrieber.
Funnily enough Hugh Jackman is himself long associated with a character which he doesn't fit the description of either, way too tall in his case (Wolverine even shorter than Cruise). -

I just scanned all of the choices by others and 99.9% of the choices are terrible actors. Hugh Jackman is the only name provided that is an "A" movie actor. It makes no sense to me why the actor needs to be big considering 99% of the worlds most talented MMA fighters are between 5'6" tall and 5'10" tall and really don't look any bigger than Cruise when they enter the ring for fights. In fact a very large person would have been completely unrealistic for the
construction site scene where he is trying to dodge bullets. -

Maybe Billy Campbellhe's 6'4" and really cut but I think he's more in line at about a well cut 210-215. -

Joe Manganiello is the perfect fit body wise that i can think of,hes 6'5" and solid with muscles but not over the top. Im sure he was mentioned earlier but i didnt look through all the comments. im reading the 3rd book now and no one but a tall big guy would fit for me after reading a few books.how many said Hugh Jackman? its like the 5th most famous guy acting today right? i like Jackman but hes a bit to likeable. Mark Wahlberg has that kind of toughness Reacher needs (not sipping on a latte after hitting the gym toughness)but to short too. Joe Manganiello though ive not seen much of his acting has the look just like Robert Duvall has the look for a seasoned cowboy. like he was poured into cowboy boots and hat when they made his mold

I think he'd be great for the role. He's tall, he's muscular (thanks to Marvel), and he's fair-haired like Reacher is regularly described as being. I think he'd work well in the role if he could fake an American accent -
