Im glad the focus was getting a quality actor and not just any big guy

That's the problem, they didn't get a "quality actor." They got Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise in every action movie he is in.
Can you really watch this movie and say he wasn't that much different in it than he was in the MI movies? Knight and Day? Minority report?
Heck, in most of his movies he's jut playing Tom Cruise. -

Totally agree.
Couldn't stop laughing to myself. "Put your shirt on!What was I saying?" PAHleeze!
And she's a lawyer, but she has to constantly ask him "What should we do next?"
2 women (besides most of the initial murder victims, of course, because where would an action flic be without dead women as victims?) with speaking parts and one is a clueless lawyer and the other a slutty gamine. Meanwhile, Cruise struts around like a banter rooster, always the smartest one in the room, forced to suffer fools who would be lost without him. With the emotional range of an eggplant, he only just keeps a lid on his arrogant smirk. I wonder when the last time was he found himself surrounded by people NOT paid to feign worship? -

I can say that Cruise acted different in this than MI. He gave a more subtle, restrained, more nuanced performance in Jack Reacher. He does not act the same in every movie. Watch Rain Man, Born on the forth of july, magnolia, eyes wide shut, the last samurai, interview with a vampire, tropic thunder, rock of ages. Different in all those movies.

Yeah, not so much. The only real difference was they didn't have more than one big action sequence for Tom.
He does not act the same in every movie.
That isn't what I said.
Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise in every
action movie
he is in. -

I'm fan of the books. I liked this movie, but when Emerson says he looks for someone who can kill with one punch, motel lady directs him to check Reacher (dont remember his alias) and says "you'll see" or something like that.

The same can be said of John Wayne. Wayne plays Wayne in nearly every one of his films.
Just because an actor does not have a diverse range of acting does not mean he isn't a great actor within his scope.
Cruise is a complete ass and a cultish idiot in his private life, but he is a damned good actor.

Wayne changed a lot over the years and what he cr&pped was not only bigger than Cruise, but a way better actor than Cruise.
And, Wayne wasn't even that great. Cruise just really sucks.
He's got two looks, his "grinning like an idiot" look and his "thinking" look, where he looks like Joey from Friends smelling his own fart. -

Still better than his female costar.
She has a single look. That of a deer in headlights.

She simply has the same problem Rachael Taylor, for instance, has - she can't act when she has to force an American accent. Taylor's boringly the same in all the American shows, but I recently saw Red Dog and found her great. Same can be said for Pike.
