Well, after seeing Age of Ultron twice I have to say that Avengers still holds the title but only just barely. It's almost too close to call but a slight edge to the original over the sequel as the holder of the "best ever" title.

I really enjoyed The Avengers, I watch it on BluRay all the time. It's a very enjoyable movie. But The Dark Knight Trilogy just does something else for me.. It moves me on a different level I guess. Hanz Zimmers score, to the wonderful acting and dark tone. I just feel fully immersed in those three films. Yet, I'm still very excited for Marvel's phase 3, with Thanos, the gauntlet and the infinity stones. I'm also excited for Batman v. Superman. I'm just an all around fan, and all these movies are nothing but fun for me. I feel bad for those who feel like they have to choose a side.. (Marvel Vs. DC). Still, I find TDK trilogy to be at the top of the mountain.

Everything has converged perfectly, delivering what is now very much the king of the genre.
The Avengers is certainly the best overall comic adaptation film ever made and still can be considered so even three years later. Really, how could it not be? They positioned this thing with FIVE other set up films that were each remarkable in their own right. Not only does it all come together but I'm happy to say this amazing cast delivers in every way. Believe it or not, every single character featured previously in those five films gets time to really shine at one point or another in this astounding movie. Even though the set up has been epic, the result was anything but assured. It would have been easy to be overwhelmed by the task of putting all these great character together and making it click but they pulled it off perfectly. Maybe it's because the characters themselves are complex and intriguing and that they have been brought to three dimensional life by people that really care. Whatever the case, EVERYONE hits a home run here. They fleshed out perfect cohesion while remembering to include the fun and humor that have made those other five films good. If you define those films as good then you'll define Avengers as great. It's a unified step up and I didn't think that possible. What's also amazing is that I think this movie works without having seen any of those other films. Then, the fun factor will be enjoyed by those that didn't care about the other movies. The depth and amazement will come from those that have invested in to this universe. What they've done is transcend any other of this genre's films by going deeper and doing so in spectacular fashion with Oscar caliber performances. -

This "king" is now little bit cringey to watch. Formulaic story, poorly fleshed out villain, plot inconstancy, too much style over substance, bland acting, etc. The Dark Knight Rises is a better piece of filmmaking than the Avengers. Watch the scene when Bruce talks to Alfred for the last time and you'll get what I mean. Also, if you're saying that the only reason why The Dark Knight Rises received high praise is due to the fact that critics were forced to gave movie a good review, then I can use same logic and say that Disney pays critics to trash DC or Fox X-Men films. The Dark Knight Rises is still the best individual superhero threequel, like it or not. Better than Iron Turd 3, for sure.
