I don't know. There are others that are good for different reasons Ils (Them), because of the suspense. Calvaire, because it just manages to be creepy. And this one for just the adrenaline rush it gives
There are others. But those three are the cream of the crop for me. And for the record, I would rate Martyrs near the bottom of the French horror I've seen. Pretentious drivel. Only Sheitan, In My Skin, and a couple of others are of lower quality. Frontier(s) would be another recommendation, though it's another Texas Chainsaw Massacre clone, similar, but not quite as good as Calvaire. -

Ils was great..at least for the first half, full of suspense and tension but then went downhill rapidly during the completely terrible final 35 mins or so. Calvaire was atmospheric but otherwise rubbish and Sheitan was also terrible, I haven't seen In my Skin. Frontiers was ok nothing more but Inside and High Tension are the best imo.

god I loved Ils so much but I got very depressed when I went to the message board because everyone seemed to hate it so I couldn't talk about it with anyone

oh yeah The Vanishing is fantastic, I have the Criterion release but I would class that as dutch. Not really shocking or scary nowadays but chilling and brilliant all the same.
Haven't seen The Baby's room, will try and check it out. -

Ooooo, Spoorloos! Excellent recommendation, I must rewatch that. -

"Inside" is too stupid to be frightening, and too idiotic and ridiculous to be upsetting. It cannot compare with an intelligent and entirely believable film such as Laugier's "Martyrs." Can't you tell the difference? Other intelligent and believable films of horror would include Sluizer's "The Vanishing" (only the original Dutch production), Haneke's "Funny Games" (preferably the original Austrian production), and Noe's "Irreversible."

It is funny that you would mention Irreversible and Inside as I would say the same thing except reversed. Irreversible has the most idiotic, annoying, selfish protagonist that I have ever seen. After his girlfriend appeared in the movie, I spent 99.9% of the rest of the film wondering why the woman, actually ANY woman, would be with him. Hell, I don't even know why his friend didn't ditch him. He reminded me of a high school boy, maybe even special ed. The film lacked any "shocking" moments and didn't have any suspense. After watching the movie the only thing I felt was disappointment that I watched it and even more disappointment that I had spent money on it. Maybe the antics of the protagonist were supposed to be comical. The Vanishing was a pretty good film as I remember it. It's the one where the guy's wife disappears, right? I haven't seen Funny Games or Martyrs. Yeah, I checked out The Vanishing. I have seen both versions- whichever one has the rose garden is the best.

I don't take people recommending quarter-century old horror-flicks, seriously.

yeah martyrs is easily the best french horror film. inside could've been up there but unfortunately the writing gets extremely stupid around the middle of the film and brings down what is otherwise a great horror film.
