this?
Looks like great cinematography, digital camera system, good FX, too devoid of character relations, usual monstrosity flick. Think I'll pass.

I've watched so much world cinema, extreme cinema and horror over the years that although this movie is good it pales in comparison to a lot of films that take the genre and push it to it's furthest reaches. Not just in gore, that is an afterthought when watching a lot of french horror as you'll know (it's plentiful but 9/10 times it still manages to fall second to the overall theme). It may well just be me but comparing it to the other french horrors I watched around the same time I found Martyrs vastly more upsetting and core shattering by ten fold. Not to mention High Tension/Switchblade Romance which deserves a respectful nod at the least!
Then again, fear is down to the individual.
I found the CGI in this film broke up the otherwise astounding atmosphere in an awful way, the vanilla performance of Sarah in comparison to the phenominal performance by Beatrice Dalle as "the woman" caused so much friction and inbalance that I almost sided with the maniac if only because she was vastly more compelling. I think this was POTENTIALLY one of the best french horror films ever but it was executed in such a way that it fell short for me.
Thinking about it, once a horror film achieves a certain level of quality (such as Inside and Martyrs) it is hard to really say which is best as it is down to the viewer and their soft spots. I found Martyrs vastly more terrifying because -I- identified with the characters to a greater extent, the subject matter switched more buttons and hit more nerves and that movie has a soul of it's own, not a sum of it's parts. Though I have gone through 2 pregnancies at this point, Inside didn't hit my nerves and I really think that as a single, 25 year old, woman who lives on her own in the arse end of nowhere, it should have. -

This was, by far, the worst French horror film I've ever seen. I can't think of a film with more idiotic characters. The woman had TWO chances to kill Sarah and take the baby while she was SLEEPING for christsake.
I loved Martyrs so someone here suggested this. WTF! The only character that made any sense was the woman and that's only because she was beep crazy. I can't even understand how this got a 7. It's wasn't scary at all and I can't believe the characters were not all mentally retarded. That would have been the only thing that would have made any of their actions make sense. What was up with Sarah not killing the woman when she was burned in the closet? Yeah she got distracted by the cop turning on the lights but why not turn back around and stab that bitch? And that cop, what did he get shot in both eyes with a 1 gauge shotgun? Seriously what was that thing a double barrel grenade launcher? There was more dialog of me yelling at the damn characters than there was in the film. Sara just goes to sleep with the gun and instead of using that she bite the woman's lip? Dumbest people and police I've ever seen. God help me if I ever need the French police to help me with ANYTHING, they turn their backs on the bad guys quite literally in this film. "Oh she is gone, it's okay" Dude the lights just went out, she obviously isn't gone. And why did the girl give herself a hole in her throat with the needle? It didn't seem like she was choking on anything and she taped it up right after. Maybe I missed something but by that time I was just to lazy to find the remote to turn it off and wanted to see the woman get killed. The cop hit her in the belly and 5 gallons of blood came out. From where? I hate when people say "worst movie ever" but I can't think of a worse one right now and this is by far the worst foreign film I've EVER watched. People are always saying on IMDB "you just didn't get it", in this case I agree. I didn't get it. I don't get how they could write such crap or how they could find people to spend money on this film or why anyone would like it. These characters make American teens in slasher flicks look like Einstein.
Please can someone let me in on this? -

French horror movies are mediocre with the exception of two titles. Too bad, but at least French cinema is strong in other genres like romance, comedies, romantic comedies, fantasy, drama, crime, war, and action, sometimes even more so than Hollywood.
And the two French horror movies I don't consider mediocre are Eyes Without A Face & Les Diaboliques. The rest is just a huge waste of time. -

Can't believe the hype about this movie. I just watched it and i must say it definitely isn't worth a 7. I would give it a 5. Yes, it was scary at the beginning, but it was just too dumb after the 2nd time the policeman came. Come on..
This is going on my booooooh list.

I too agree with every word HeyFoxymophandlemama wrote. This is one of the all time worst movies I've ever watched. Every character in it was stupid stupid stupid!!!
