All I know is when that green bucket was blown off the post, hit the ground, bounced and rolled on its side, I thought there was so much observation and artistry in just that one scene it's incredible.
      OH THE HUGE MANATEE!!!

From what I read, Miyazaki spent ages working on just the waves alone in the film, making them all perfect. And in my opinion, I think he did an AMAZING job, because water and moving waves are incredibly hard to draw!!
I also thought the underwater scenes were beauuutiful too - totall reminded me of princess mononoke or something during those scenes. The fish swimming along the roads.ahhhh that was awesome.
I need to get this on dvd now.

Obviously Miyazaki was going for that particular artistic style. But I agree the "choppiness" does affect it for me at times. He must render it at 12fps or something low It doesn't seem smooth and you can discern the frames really easily as opposed to US animation. Still, great film and I really enjoyed it!

I personally could not bear watching Ponyo. I actually don't like to watch Disney feature films either (tv series seemed ok) Its not the frames that bother me.
What bothers me is very bright colors, lack of shadows, many details in the background constantly moving. It is hard to focus on the characters when everything is so bright and distracting.
In addition its the character style. I , for the most part, can't stand comic style anime characters. No matter what anime one watches the characters all look the same and have very similar expression. I just dont like it.

You've just listed exactly why I like the animation in this. But each to their own I suppose.

The Japanese are known for animating at a lower framerate (usually at 6-8fps instead of the usual 12-24fps), including Miyazaki hence the choppy look. It's due, originally, to budget restraints. Now it's unfortunately become a "style". Yuck.
Miyazaki, according to some of his essays, absolutely LOATHES the "anime style". Purposely animating at 6-8fps to give it the choppy "anime" look, stupid looking pink hair, ridiculously huge eyes bleggh. That's why his movies don't look like the junky made for TV stuff anime fans gush over.
Some of his stuff is animated at a lower framerate, especially the early films. That's not his choice though, it's dictated by the budget unlike some productions where it's purposely done.

sammyrockstar: Hmm.. What? You're just so very wrong here. I'm always bothered by the low framerate when starting to watch an anime. Luckily I get used to it after a while, but it still seems so unnecessary that they won't do a full 24/25 frames/second even in 2011. Maybe it's a budget thing, I don't know.

Well, Ponyo used about 170,000 'cels' :
                    http://www.kidsfilms.com.au/2009/07/170000-cells-of-ponyo/
(not just this site, plenty of others say it used over 170000 drawings)
And The Little Mermaid used about 150,000 cels :
http://www.mylittlemermaid.com/gallery.html (and plenty of other sites reference this figure)
So Ponyo is comparable to Disney in terms of movement and the amount of work involved.
It's also a longer film than many Disney films (100 mins plus) so the frame rate would be 'spread out' a bit more

The numbers don't really mean much. Ponyo has tons of moving backgrounds and creatures. The actual number of frames for character animation is probably half that of a Disney movie.
I noticed many instances of awkward and unnatural looking movements. Watch Sosuke's mother carry the groceries through the parking lot with massive steps. It looks like she is trying to step from one stone to another while crossing a lake. No regard for realistic motion what so ever. The walk and run cycles also seemed off. The feet seemed to continue moving while the character stayed somewhat static. I enjoyed Ponyo, but I still usually notice these inconsistencies.

People complain about the animation? Until now, I didn't know they did. But I like the animation in this, I loved how smooth it was and I actually liked the bright colors, although I can see how some people might find that annoying.

I think it has to do with Miyazaki opting for entirely hand-drawn cells, instead of the computer-rendering he did for his last few works. Don't get me wrong, Howl's Moving Castle looks fantasticbut it's easily one of the most-confusing movies I've ever seen in my entire life. If it weren't for the strong characterizations, fantastic music, excellent animation and poignant themes, I'd probably hate it for that reason alone (weird considering I've seen it 4 times already.) Ponyo may be simpler in design, but I love it because it doesn't give me a headache for not understanding everything that goes on

Peope complain about the animation? I thought it was by far the best part of the movie which was otherwise lacking in story and characters.
