"More autonomy" and "where children never get hurt" are two entirely different things.

Wonderful, I was referring to this:
"Japan is a much safer society than ours"
in relation to small children being left alone in a house.

          ROTFLMAO!
I thought the same thing when that guy tried to make Japan seem as if the normal rules don't apply.
But then again, this is a children's film. I think part of the problem has to do with the fact that we live in an age of uber awareness of danger and of helicopter parenting. You have to remember though, a LOT of children's stories involve autonomous unsupervised children. You can start with The Cat In The Hat for one where the children are left alone unsupervised (until 3:30) to Pippi Longstocking and how all the adults in the stories have no problem with their kids going up in hot air balloons or running awa from home, just as long as they're with Pippi. In fact if I tried hard enough, I could name all sorts of stories where this is the case, even films. Remember E.T.? He was left alone unsupervised repeatedly throughout that film. To the point where they even thought he was left alone with the family beer stockpile.

With all due respect - a Japanese five-year old alone at the house (during a typhoon, no less!) is just as capable of causing an accident as an American or European five-year old left alone in a house. Safer society=/=safer houses. And don't even get me started on the driving.

Exactly. And as someone else also pointed out - driving terribly, not putting on his seatbelt, taking her eyes off the road to eat icecream (WHAT?!). Also, let's not forget where she left him to walk alone from his school to her workplace in a severe storm - and before our Japanese friend decides to butt in with his talk of a safer society and autonomous children - a five year old japanese weighs just as much as a western kid and can be blown away by a violent gust of wing or splattered by a fallen tree branch with just as much ease. So no, the excuse "We are a safer society" just doesn't fly in this particular case.

Plusthis little girl shows up at the house and spends the nightand Lisa doesn't even seem to think there's anything strange about that. She did ask what Ponyo's dad didbut not where are your parents we need to call them. Then she leaves the two little kids home alone.

                  I know!
Thank god Japan is so much safer!
I guess it is time for me to move there so my 5 year old will be able to handle major disasters unsupervised and I will have no worries!
WOW. IMDB brings out the most intelligent people.

To be fair to Lisa, she did leave the house for a good reason. Her house was high enough to be safe from the flood waters and she had a responsibility to help out at the senior center during the blackout. It wasnt a completely risk free move though. Would have been more sensible to take them both with her.

On Japan being safer for younger kids, at least Tokyo & metro Tokyo: Yes. It actually is, from my experience. Some of the posters here can't understand that maybe, just maybe, that some other country with a different culture is a tad bit safer than the great U.S. of A.
I know, sad face and tears.
From my own experience I've seen kids ride the massive subway line throughout Tokyo without any parents. Some times the kids are alone. Sometimes they are in massive groups with matching sailor outfits (they do indeed where them). I can bet the youngest was at least 9, with his butterfly net, an almost seemingly indestructible backpack, dressed in his school hat and all during rush hour. None of the fellow passengers eyed them suspiciously or were worried for their immediate safety. Why? Because they themselves went through the same thing. I was worried at first, but I soon got use to their independence on the subway. They're such cutie pies!

                        Dude
we are not talking about a subway here. We are talking about 2 5 year old children in the middle of a natural disaster????????? What the heck are you talking about? So natural diasters are safer in Japan than other countries?
It is neglegent. Plain and simple. No one in their right mind would leave a couple of 5 year olds during a natural disaster unless they did not care what happened to them.

I never said such a thing. My post was general safety in public areas. I was responding to those who were commenting on Japan's safety not natural disasters.

This is the most utterly pathetic thread on IMDb.
