There may have been more than one Kathy and that was a way to identify a particular one. There is no indication that Bernie called her that to her face, and she was very upset that she had misunderstood what kind of card she was putting her comments on.
By the way, the first time that I watched the scavenger hunt episode, I was horrified by Bernie. I watched it again last night, and it was really very, very funny.
She is very competitive. Much like Monica in
    Friends
    .

so it's OK to call Kathy "Wheelchair Kathy" behind her back?

I don't see why not if she is trying to distinguish her from, say, "Body Odor Kathy."

          Why, does it bother you?

I have always thought she was hilarious in that. Nice to see you are now on board.
            🙂
As to the OP, you are confusing a mean person with someone who can be mean from time to time. Once you make that adjustment, you will not be troubled by Bernadette's opinion on the motorized miniature Prof Hawking.

But does that mean the rest of us can realize it's funny the FIRST time we see it, or do we have to also be offended the first time, and then LATER realize it's funny?

In an ideal world I would say the former, but I cannot hold people to the ideal and so I guess the latter suffices. IMHO ofc

Can I assume that you are addressing that comment
                  to
the OP? I have been trying to tell him that for quite a while without any success.

I was not at all bothered by Bernie's reaction to the Hawking toy.

She may not have actually been offended by the Stephen Hawking doll. She may have just thought it was ridiculous and was using its supposed offensive nature to get Howard to put it away.

If they had made that a point, the scenario might have been actually funny.

Wheelchair Kathy didn't get stuck under their dishwasher, though.
