They have a ton of immigrants/ethnic minorities with lower moral standards, their law enforcement is highly effective and well equipped, and they have less corruption than most other countries, so criminals are pursued and prosecuted.
There's far more crime everywhere else, it just goes unpunished.

It's really strange because so many crimes get a slap on the wrist, and criminals are simply released over and over again, and they become repeat offenders who do not ever see the inside of a jail cell.
On the other hand, one thing I have a problem with is non-violent drug offenses. I think they are punished far too harshly and are put in prison for far too long when they never should have been put there in the first place. Meanwhile, I see sex offenders and murderers going free after 15 years. It's all screwed up. Our judicial system needs to be overhauled.
The other thing is, America is a huge country, and we have states the size of some other countries. We are not an island where harsh rules would and could have instant impacts. We are a giant land mass, and now we're overflowing with even more people. Trying to compare a country of our side, with two ocean coasts and two land borders, our population alone is so high that to smaller countries, our numbers seem extensive.

Look at where that is happening. Look at which party controls the area.

Probably because they give very, very long prison sentences. Other countries have a limit of what 'life' means whereas in America they literally lock people up for life with no chance of ever getting out. Other countries try to rehabilitate rather than lock up and throw away the key.

Yeah, when a lot of American prisoners get out they continue with their crime and may even do worse ones that put them back in.
What good are prisons if they are not doing enough to prevent crime before and after one gets out of it?
Dangerous people should be locked up but not enough is being done to prevent them from being dangerous in the first place.

I watched or read something fairly recently about people who were given really long sentences years ago for charges relating to weed which despite now being legal in some states, these people are stuck in prison and I can't remember the details but it is not that easy or straightforward to release them. So basically people serving prison sentences for crimes that are essentially now legal …
