What happens in the USA if a 12 year old commits a murder?

In the UK and EU, they'll get named and get out when they turn 18-21 with a new identity and a lifetime of police protection. I guess in the states you lot learned with Edward Kemper who murdered his granny and granda with a shotgun, and then got out after 5 years to skullf uck college girls and his mum plus her best friend!
Personally, i think they should never get out and head to an adult jail at 18 years of age!
