The girls could have avoided it by "being safe". Their naivete (or stupidity) are largely to blame for it.
If they had been much more cautious - as teens are not wont to do - such things wouldn't have happened.
Still, if she had a sensible head on her shoulders, she would have been fine.

Western Europe is not a dangerous place like this movie makes it out to be. The most dangerous thing likely to happen to you is pickpocketing, or getting lightly beat up/mugged. But you'll only get beat up if you really attempt to, by going to some very shady neighbourhoods in late nights, despite warnings.
Even ex-Soviet countries can be safe, if you have half a brain about safety and common cons.

Yeah, the mom is really annoying and mean to him, but I think that was the purpose for that character. She was a horribly written stereotype, angry ex-wife who was just there to make Neeson look heroic.
I remember she said something like their daughter needs to travel without her parents to experience what the world is really like. Terrible logic! Thats like allowing her to try drugs or become a prostitute if she wants, otherwise she wont know what it`s like.

Yeah, she was trying to hard to be the "cool mom".
For a movie like this to work, she needed to be written & portrayed as short sighted and somewhat dense.

Man what a dumb btch And she stayed a dumb btch throughout the whole movie. One of the most unlikable characters I've come across.

Both parents are major failures for not teaching their daughter the most basic of all safety skills - DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS!! Of course, most kids are taught this young, and by Kim's age know,at least, not to give out your address.

Then technically, it was Amanda's parents fault. They raised her to be a total dumbass.

I was so furious when I watched this. I hate Lenny, she needs to be spanked. It's hard to watch and enjoy the movie with such an idiot character like that. Even the daughter was hard to sympathize with. Did she have ADHD or what?

I HATED that stupid beep I never really cared for these movies and just happened to catch Taken 3 at my friends the other day kind of half-watching, anyway I was so happy when she got
Killed, I only wish it would have been on screen and more gruesome
it made me remember this first movie. Now that I'm watching the original it really does not seem as great as I once thought it might be. I think I gave it an 8, granted I'm only 30 min in I just had to let out how much I hate that Lenore. I feel like its a 5.5 movie right now, wait til the good parts and the end ill probably give it a 7, didn't age well, but not horribly, just a point I'd say.

The mom was annoying but I can understand the bitterness of her marriage to a man who wasnt home very often, missed most of his daughters life and wasnt there for his wife.
That feeling in her is obviously still present.
And she was very grateful at the end oO
The daughter was 17. Thats one year before of age. Her friend Amanda was 19 years old, a young adult. And she ended up dead before rescue arrived.
Noone is too blame for that. Well the culprits are.
Could have happened at home as well.
Actually this is a quite unlikely story to happen in every aspect.

I couldn't understand why she would want her young daughter to go travelling across Europe on her own. My mam panics when I go on holiday even in the same country with her or my dad and I'm 25.
I would have listened to Bryan, he knows about what happens in Europe

Damn, Lenore was such a b!tch. Make the ex-wife a real unappreciative condescending witch, and it generates more sympathy for the protagonist. It's a tried and true formula for testosterone-ladened action movies that's geared mostly for a male target audience. Didn't we all wish Neeson's character were a little more vindictive? If he sued for custody of Kim, is there any judge who wouldn't have awarded custody to him after hearing how much of an irresponsible parent Lenore is?

There are a great many judges who give custody to drug addict mothers over straight-living men, this is simply the reality of living in a feminazi society. If you look at the statistics for custody decisions, the distribution is absolutely disturbing. The reason is simple, men work harder and therefore earn more money, and can therefore pay more money into the divorce industry than if the roles were reversed.

There are literally millions of women dumping their husbands and breaking up families in order to snag a richer man, it happens every day and shouldn't shock anyone unless they live in a bubble. The mother character was incredibly nasty but sadly a lot of these women exist and they and the divorce industry make a lot of money from family breakups.

                                        Maybe.
But there are a lot more men who have divorced their wives and abandoned their family to chase after a younger woman.
