I remember the Cat story being pleasant enough. I've heard Number of the Beast is one of the worst books ever published though, not touching that one.

Heinlen develops this creepy interest in incestuous and near-incestuous relationships in Beast and one other later book which is just wretched, the pits

Since I love making lists, I may as well post my favorites, even if I'm not nearly as widely read in the genre.
        Arthur C Clarke - Childhood's End
Joe Haldeman - The Forever War
Iain Banks - Use of Weapons, Excession
Jack Womack - Random Acts of Senseless Violence
        Peter F Hamilton - Pandora's Star
Ursula K Le Guin - The Left Hand of Darkness
Alfred Bester - The Stars My Destination
George Orwell - Nineteen Eighty Four
Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game
PKD - Ubik, Flow My Tears the Policeman Said
Walter M Miller Jr - A Canticle for Leibowitz
Frank Herbert - Dune, Dune Messiah
        Asimov - Foundation Series
        Robert Heinlein - Double Star
Vernor Vinge - Fire Upon the Deep
        Alistair Reynolds - Revelation Space
James Morrow - This Is The Way The World Ends
JG Ballard - The Drowned World

Did Speaker for the Dead for a book club recently, wasn't really blown away. Ender's Mary Sue-ness kind of went into overdrive. And the melodrama, my god the melodrama. It was telenovela level. Did have some fairly neat ideas in-between all that though, the Piggies are a great creation.
            Heathern, Elvissy, Terraplane
Looking forward to getting to these, glad to hear they're good. I understand they're a lot less grounded than "Random Acts"

Ha! Some of the language towards the end of Random Acts really was painfully contorted, great stuff. I hear Lola has a cameo in one of the other books

I don't remember if Lola appears but Dryden and Lola's two girl friends do appear again.

Dryden? I don't think I recall a Dryden in the book. Good to hear about the girl friends though.

Their sugardaddy, the guy who owns the company with the smiley face, is Thatcher Dryden. His company is Dryco and features prominently in the other books.

Of course his name is Thatcher.

Fitzy hasn't even read the books. I'm not sure she's watched the show either
Besides, Game of Thrones has been thoroughly accepted by the mainstream at this point.

Are messageboards not rather normal now as well? Granted, maybe most people wouldn't post even half as much but still. And IMDB is a special place.
Surely the common man wouldn't stoop as low as Proust.
In any case, Fitz is merely deeply uncool, not a nerd.
