Lord of the Rings is more tightly constructed, but the world George R. R. Martin has created is far more complex and rich with lore. However, in the later books, GRRM has gotten so meandering with the story that it's hard to endorse him over Tolkien (not to mention that Martin makes no attempt to finish his series anytime soon). I think that if the Game of Thrones television series ends well, it will be considered the best out of anything we're talking about here. The show has beautifully illustrated GRRM's vast world, but has also successfully tightened the narrative and streamlined the storylines extremely well.

Too late for that.

JRRT wrote PG rated kiddie stuff back then, albeit masterpieces in that, especially liked by hippies. The movies are nice CGI orgies for tween boys.
GRRM writes adult fantasy, also great, even if a bit logorrheic. The show is amazing, yet - like the novels - not for the squeamish or meninists. Plus 73 long episodes is better than 3 long movies.

2nd best fantasy ever would be a young Valerie Bertenelli and Monica Belluci fighting over me in the hot tub.
To paraphrase Oedipus, Hamlet, Lear, and all those guys, "I wish I had known this some time ago. -

This is what I mean, do people really believe this is top notch fantasy (I don't know much about the genre besides the famous ones) or will this be cast aside after it's over eventually?
Like I said above I don't think it will but I could see if it dies down.
