Yes, I agree. At the beginning of the series it wouldn't have made sense, they were too different. I remember the Havers character as being very dark and angry; she had a troubled life.
I think I missed quite a few mid-series episodes, because it got too gloomy for me (Lynley's unborn baby dying was the last straw!). But rejoining the Lynley series in its final year, the quality is just outstanding. And the Havers character has grown and lightened a lot - got over her class issues especially. She's even prettier!
I just saw the "One Guilty Deed" episode last night (holiday camp in The Fens). I thought they might get together in that one, but sadly no - 'twas not to be.

I dont think they will get together romantically because of the class thing. I can see the admiration on her part as a friend and vice versa. They work together so good and he depends on her so much. Trust is their main trait

If they did get together I hope she would keep calling him "Sir". Kinky.

Not enough value is given to male/female
              friendships
on tv shows and movies. People always want to see couples hook up romantically even when it doesn't really fit the characters. I never saw a romantic thing between them and part of what I like about the show is their non-romantic closeness. I just wish his relationship with Helen had been better or that Havers had a relationship with that neighbor or the guy at the key party.

I felt they grew closer after havers was shot.but the one where the constable was holding a double barrel shot gun on Havers in the pub gave them a different relationship IMO
Havers was gasping and panicky and Lynley put his arm around her shoulder kind of brotherly..so i think he showed his devotion and it appeared brotherly.
too many shows are ruined when the stars who are partners grow romantic. It loses crediblity to me

There's a certain chemistry between Lynley and Havers that, imho, would be completely ruined if the two would get together on screen. It's like - John Steed and Mrs. Peel getting together. You CAN imagine it might happen, you might even write fan fictions about it but somehow you don't really want to actually SEE it. Because getting together means everything changes. I'm not sure that strong relationship they got right now would survive that. It's special now - but it would become ordinary and commonplace if they got together. Just my two cents

Good friends and working partners, yes. Romantically involved, no way. They remind me of a brother and sister that are always at odds -well, not all of the time.

I know this is an old post, but I'm responding anyway.
I read and interview, years ago, with either Patrick MacNee or Diana Rigg (can't remember which) in which he/she stated that the viewer was supposed to assume that Steed and Mrs Peel were lovers. I've seen every episode several times and never got that impression, but I've discussed it with friends and some think so and others don't.

If they're lovers it must be a very slimy, covert kind of affair as Lynley has always displayed his devotion to Helen and guilt for having a job that takes him away from her for even a moment. Also, Havers is honest to a fault and wouldn't allow herself to be used like that and betraying Helen, who always showed Havers hospitality.

I am going along the books and not the TV show, there was never any impression that these two were anything but colleagues and good friends. There was never any chemistry there. Havers in the more recent books had feelings (if you can call them that as you couldn't say "in love" at this stage) for her neighbour.

I never thought Steed and Mrs Peel were meant to be lovers. Just colleagues I thought. They didn't seem at all lover like to me.

I know this post is old, but, I just wanted to say that I think Lynley and Havers would have made a perfect couple. They had great chemistry, balanced each other out and clearly adored each other

                                Agree.
Also - was it just me, or was the last ever episode never shown? As with Silent Witness, it appeared a current court case was being heard that bore similarity to the storyline. I remember well that BBC1 put on an old episode.
BUT never showed the missing episode (as far as I know). Next thing = show was cancelled, great shame.

I think it's a great shame that it was cancelled. It's one of the best detective shows I've seen and certainly - along with Silent Witness - the BBC's best

Moonlighting went downhill after Maddie and David hooked up. Havers and Lynley would be another disaster. I can't imagine both of them having romantic feelings for the other at the same time.
They are colleagues at work and even being friends is difficult between a boss and underling.
