Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Inspector Lynley Mysteries

    deforest-1 — 12 years ago(April 27, 2013 01:10 AM)

I really liked the Inspector Lynley series as a rule but I've just watched Helen II's pointless death for the second time at least, and can't let the silly contrivance of it go unnoted. Helen (Catherine Russell), a police psychologist as I understand it, has told Nina, Bosnian survivor of her family's murder by genocide, that their murderer is being brought in. Nina goes storming out, wanly trailed by Helen, and pulls a handgun as she exits this major police centre. As Nina aims at the villain Pavletich, all the police on hand including Lynley stand impotently rooted to their spots. Only Helen takes action. And what does she do? Puts herself ludicrously directly inbetween to act as the villain's shield so that Nina won't ruin the rest of her life. This stupid act can only end one way Helen irreparably ruining her own life. Lynley absurdly tries to reason with Nina, out of her mind with rage, instead of screaming at his wife to get out of the bloody way. I can see now why everyone calls him "Tommy". "Tommy Tiddles" might be better.

In the book What Came Before He Shot Her, tells of a different ending to Helen. I think it is because it would have been difficult to transfer that story to TV so they came up with another angle.

I read the books too. In the books Helen is Lady Helen something of an "it" girl you can call her. She doesn't have a full time job but she works part time for Simon St. James as an assistant (I wish they had kept Simon and Deborah beyond A Great Deliverance). She's like a source of light to Lynley because he deals with so much darkness in his work and in his family life. But the "lady" was dropped and she was given a full blown job as a profiler because I guess it was felt the character needed to be more deep. In the book her death is a real shock. Fans were so outraged, Elizabeth George dropped the chatroom from her website.

Agreed and to add the Bosnian girl actually lowers the gun and everyone there just casually exhales instead of rushing the crazy girl and taking the gun. Of course Helen hadn't moved and the girl decides she'll just shoot through her, b/c what the hell someone has to die for calling her people spineless.

After what the girl did earlier to Winston I'm not surprised she did the same thing later.lowers the gun and then raises and shoots.
Personally I didn't like the Helen character. I always wished Lynley & Havers had got together.
