The books are so great, and the characters so rich. But the series just gets it wrong.
Nothing against Nathanial Parker, who I have liked in other things, but he is not at all like Lynley from the books, physically or any other way.
Helen, I don't even know where to start. She is played as dour and grim. In the books she is not at all like that. In fact one of the reasons that Lynley is so drawn to her is that she is an antedote to his depressing job.
Havers is the only well done character.
And why or why did they leave out Simon? I don't care much about Deborah as I always felt that her storyline bordered on melodrama. But I love Simon.
So disappointing. The pacing is slow, which would be fine if they actually included Simon and had done the character of Helen better -

You are so right. Where is Simon? I also love Nathaniel Parker but reading the books I see Rupert Penrys (whatever his name is) who would have been perfect. Helen Clyde is supposed to be a sweet light hearted woman. I will not watch past the two episodes I have endured. I shall re=read the books instead.
