Why don't they choose REAL gay actors?

Don't worry. You'll be so satisfied you'll pray for more and more! I like submissive and obedient people: I enjoy much more beating them with my belt!

OK, this thread obviously stopped being serious a long time ago (if it ever was). But all the same: How has nobody mentioned Denis O'Hare! He played the homophobic Senator Briggs (and did a fine job of it) and yet is apparently gay himself! I suspect he would've been as good as Penn (if not better) had he been cast as Milk himself.

Just for the same reason they don't always chose REAL married actors to play married people on screen and REAL drug-using actors to play drug addicts. It's called ACTING. You're EXPECTED to portray a character you're not. That's a major part of the job description.

That's why it's called acting ,put real gays in place of straight actors .Doesn't mean. The performances will be any better its not reality t.v its make believe.Reality is just and illusion created by and actor

If Americans can play Brits, a son of a small-town baker can play the President of the USA and the nicest guy on the planet can play a sick, terrifying serial killer, I don't see what the issue is with a straight man playing a gay man. The whole point of their job is in pretending to be other people, right?
If you think old movies are boring or modern movies suck, you haven't seen enough of either. -

Well, "Gods and Monsters" features 'out' actor Ian McKellen as real-life gay director James Whale. Nathan Lane - another 'out' actor - played an openly gay best friend in "Frankie and Johnny". And "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" features a real-life 'drag queen' playing a fictitious one.

There are plenty of gay actors in this movie but Sean Penn is one of the greatest actors alive today, and to get him to play Harvey Milk will make people who may not have otherwise watched this movie and its a very important movie and that is what is truly important.
