I've seen tons of slow a$$ movies I love, but this one was overly long and had a story that wasn't very interesting for the most part. The dialogue was okay but not oscar worthy. And most of all it's just propaganda. As a guy who actually ISN'T homophobic, it was just tedious to have to sit through a bunch of messages any sane person already knew. (Keep in mind, my favorite tv series ever is Six feet under, slow as balls but far more meaningful about homosexuality than this movie could ever be) This film may be good for homophobes, but for me it was nothing more than gay propaganda and obvious oscar bait, saved only by Penn's incredibly genuine performance.
So why did it entertain you people?

I'm sure you are far from the only one who got bored, but I found it compelling. It was the classic charismatic leader who galvanizes his oppressed faction to fight greater forces and come to greatness story line. Worked for Kirk Douglas in Spartacus too.

I suppose you're right. I did like Spartacus though, less oscar baity.

Oscar bait cannot be denied, but then Penn's performance matched up to the vehicle. I find him as a person a bit distasteful, but can't deny the talent. Also think the candle light scene so well done as to make the movie worth it by itself.
