The rust house in the country was shown in the beginning, on the rainy night when the soldiers went to notify. Later, Thompson said they notified the mother at 2am. This would lead you to believe that the rust house was mom's. However, it was the same house as shown at the end, with Phelps written on the mail box. This would indicate it was the father's house. Oops. But really, a great movie no matter mistakes there may have been.

Since his parents were divorced they would have notified both parents separately. That was his father's house.
