This film was like watching a real family grow up in this time-frame.

I was digging the indie vibe and it was delightful to watch not only this family but America and my own past evolve in this film. From Britney Spears to Sara Palin to emo phases to weird facial hair college freshmen. I enjoyed it.
Everyone's on here hating on the mom for being depicted as less likable and bad at making choices for her family BUT I just want to point out that there are tons of films about deadbeat dads who don't care about their kids so I LOVED the perspective of a dad who takes his kids every other weekend and has valuable time with them, teaching them about life. I loved when they played catch and when they went camping and how chill he was with other men in his children's lives and how he never spoke negatively about the mom to the kids. I appreciated that perspective.
Father figures are so lost in our culture today so it was great to see the depiction of someone unexpected (a jobless musician who knocked up his high school girlfriend) be so impactful in his children, specifically his son's life.
