Watch a series on Netflix called
Call the Midwife
.
It's based on the memoirs of a real nursing midwife in the 50's and 60's. It's very, very good, and I'd highly recommend it. I binged all 8 seasons without blinking.
Things come up like smoking, and thalidomide babies, using real names of those children and parents who helped bring this to public awareness. They discuss vaccines and pox. Abandonment, abortion, teenage or unwanted or unplanned pregnancies, various family dynamics, and what broke my heart, what they often did to the thalidomide babies after they were born.
They also show foster homes, and spousal abuse. They cover so much.

I was so surprised that I enjoyed it because I have no innate interest in anything to do with obstetrics, or childbirth, or anything related, and I can't remember what inspired me to even give it a shot. But I was hooked from the first episode.

I tend to agree. Many crazy and horrible things have actually happened.
Still, after having watched this movie a few years ago, I just found the situation far fetched.
Could it happen? Sure. Obviously…
