I liked the ending because I actually like movies that sharply contrast their tone and/or story. Not to say it was a good ending in terms of quality filmmaking, but it was my kind of ending. when I watch an action comedy, I don't want the movie to try to fuddle the two styles together like Ride Along or 21 jump street, I want a movie with laughs and then punch you in the face action, like the later Lethal Weapon movies. With this movie; I love how it is a tight and intense thriller for an hour and a half, and then, not giving away spoilers, something entirely different in the last fifteen.

At the end I was fully expecting our heroine to be surrounded by hungry zombies, nothing gets explained, and credits roll. Instead we got something so much crazier and more frightening. All I could think at the end was that she shouldn't go to Houstonit's just them, imitating the voices of people in distress

I actually thought this as well while watching haha. I think it might because the film does such a great job of establishing that air of uncertainty. I mean, I was exactly surprised to see the aliens at the end given that I knew it had at least some connection to Cloverfield, and yet I still found myself wondering throughout the film what exactly was out there.

I would have loved if instead of aliens (or zombies) the smaller creatures from the first movie were the things chasing her around. That's it. She could have killed them or gotten bit, who cares. But the little things would have been a nice way to tie it to the first film.

Completely agree, it would have been a nice way to tie it to the first Cloverfield, they could've also showed Clovie himself when Michelle's like "oh you gotta be kidding me" and a shot of clovie approaching her from a distance, would've been so epic.

I really liked the way they did the ending. Yes, they could have been subtle, but for me I actually find it frustrating when filmmakers introduce a concept without exploring it a little further. John Goodman plays a crazy guy in this film and I was frankly shocked that the alien invasion theory turned out to be true (or at least plausible). Plus, after she brought down the alien "airplane" and drove off to Houston, it sets everything up for a sequel. I don't know if they will make a sequel, but I would love it if they did.

To me the movie revolved around whether John was good or bad and whether he was telling the truth or not. When Michelle wakes up and John first appears he's bad. Then with Emmett appearing and the story of the attack there's the chance he might be good or he might be crazy. It goes back and forth like this with each new twist, the recall of the accident, the missing girl, the woman outside, the message on the glass. The aliens are the final twist that does at least open up the chances of a sequel. If there were no aliens then the film would be a horror film with a happy ending (at least for for Michelle) and I think that would lessen the film.
If there was no action at the end and instead she drives to the nearest town to find it empty but ravaged then it might be closer to the feel of the rest of the film but harder to make a sequel. That also wouldn't really be an ending to this film.
The aliens surprised me but then the movie is SciFi horror so perhaps I shouldn't of been surprised. It's also the follow on film from Cloverfield which itself was an alien monster SciFi horror film so we have to expect aliens. The ending itself didn't seem entirely bad, it just came as a surprise that was different to the rest of the film. I definitely want to see what happens in Houston so I guess, at the end of the day, that's my justification.

I know a lot of people didn't like the alien attack, I believe it was necessary. She says that she has ran when things got hard her whole life. She ran from John Goodman every time, she could have finished him off several times but she always did just enough so she could escape.
It was a forced confrontation that she absolutely couldn't escape from. She was forced to fight to overcome her automatic response to run. It made her fight for her life. Some sort of inescapable situation had to happen for character development.
Was it done properly or could have been better? That's up to you to decide.

I don't have to justify anything.
I liked her and her "take no prisoners" attitude. The entire time, she didn't play helpless little girl victim. I'm guessing that if she had been a he, the attitude toward this movie would have been more positive. I love it.

it sucked. She should have died. Are you telling me this little lady did all that by herself at the end. It would rather have military save her.

It was alright, the alien design was terrible though IMO. Ever since war of the worlds came out, all alien ships have to be living creatures. It was cool once, now it just looks silly.

The entire movie was very good. The ending left an opening for a sequel which is a good thing. My family of five, ages 28-64 all enjoyed the film immensely. Anyone who complains about this film is not a sci-fi fan. Science fiction as good as this are not common and anyone who likes sci-fi has a responsibility to encourage more production activity. Negativity only discourages funding of this most expensive genre.

It was a flaming molotov cocktail, which she deliberately employed after she was shown reacting to the explosions
In other words, they spelled out her awareness that the aliens' "gas" was highly flammable & explosive
The movie shows the aliens' vulnerability to flame, and shows Michelle spotting that vulnerability
