I like how you're making sure to draw attention to which parties did what as if it means anything. It's pretty much universally understood that Democrats were the conservatives back then and Republicans were the liberals. Seems you're one of the scant few who didn't get the memo.

I think it is sort of amusing that the liberal press made such a big deal about this. It must have been a slow news day. Obviously, Haley couldn't afford to offend some Republican voters who hold a different view on the Civil War's cause.
In the end, what Haley should have said was:
"The Civil War ended way back in 1865, I plan on leading the country in 2024. Next question please."
